But that was prior to the last revelation.

Best to figure that if you had anything to do with clearances and/or Fed gov employment after 2000, you have been compromised.

looked at the faq, said they were meeting with stakeholders to identify monitoring solutions and crap and would then notify those affected "in the coming months".

There's pretty much nothing those affected can really do about this. There's so much information in there, that anyone could pose as you and most likely answer those lame security questions that companies use to authenticate you. Think of the things your credit card asks you to verify who you are when you call them - that information is most likely in these documents. Where did you go to high school? Which of these is your former address? What is your grandmother's maiden name?

There isn't much to keep someone from ruining your life with this, if they so choose.

The real danger of this breach is not to individuals but to our financial institutes. I think the worst is a coordinated attack on our lending system. A group could defraud tens of billions from lenders before we even catch on that something is happening, and the worst problem is that there is basicly no way to stop them. All lenders would have to fall back on in person interviews with photo ID to prevent it because the attackers would have all the information they need to pass practically any security question.

They will also have all the information they need to file a tax return in someone's name. What if next year the IRS gets 20 million fake tax returns? How will they handle that?

It's kinda sad when a US government agency does not have enough bandwidth for something. They practically OWN the internet, like, literally. They made it. 😛

While the questions felt intrusive at times, I understood the reasons for them, and I trusted that my information would be guarded closely.

But that trust was broken.
