Several years ago (before W95) a guy I know had Win3.1 loaded on his work computer. He called me to say it wouldn't boot to Windows. I went over to check it out and it was screaming with error messages on boot up. At first I thought it might have been a virus but decided to ask him what he was doing just before it stopped working. He said he was cleaning out some files he no longer needed to free up HD space. I asked what files? He said, "C:\DOS."

When I was in High School I used to volunteer with the schools tech (even got paid) ....... ya ya I was a Uber Geek

One of our brilliant english teachers somehow managed to stuff 2 3.5" floppies into the drive on a Mac SE.

Thorin

That's a funny story that the school used macs. I'd lose the redundant part about the floppy. We already know mac users are "special."

Hehe, that reminds me of when I built a brand-new computer for the head of Fiscal. My supervisor went to install an additional piece of software on it, and I got a call saying the CD-ROM drive was malfunctioning on this new build :| what's the deal?

So I went to see. The computer was under a desk, and had a black Sony CD-ROM drive in it, and the drive was making unhappy noises, so I opened the CD-ROM tray, took out the software CD... and the dark-blue music CD that was underneath it
rolleye.gif
...and what do you know, the CD-ROM drive had a much easier time reading the software CD all of a sudden.

:D

What's that one rule called? Occam's Razor? ;)

I work in Technology for a living and I have seen some crazy things at work.

1) I get a call from someone telling me a CD is stuck in the drive and the drive is not reading the CD; I walk over to his desk to take a look. It turned out to be a 'mini CD' and he had shoved into the floppy diskette drive.

2) One of the Executive VP's drops my desk to complain that his LS120 SuperDisk drive will not eject the floppy diskette. I take a look at it and it seems pretty jammed in there; I used a pair of tweezers to pull out the diskette. The diskette has a 'post-it' note attached to it and the note was peeling away when he tried to eject the diskette, the diskette got stuck because of it. I asked the guy why did you put a post-it note on the diskette; he told me "I have to know files are on there".

I respect many a Techs who do this for a living as it takes patience and a great art of communication esp trouble shooting on the phone.
I service what I build but what I dislike is when a Customer says to just get them the parts, then calls me for help to put it together.

Last week I got a call from a 6 year old Puter and they wanted a refund because it finally stopped working cause 98 crashing

Went there and found over 10 virus's, 700 adaware's spots so I decided to reformat it and then they didn't want to pay me the $100 for fixing it!

Around work we had a common joke of when something didn't work you just type Format C:. Well just after this one guy quit a friend of mine gets a call one afternoon asking for help. He said his computer wouldn't boot anymore, when my friend asked what he did he said it was messin up so he typed Format C:. My friend was able to keep a straight face long enough to tell him what he had done and how to reload windows, but what a laugh we got afterwards. Guess it just goes to show you not to joke when the wrong people might be listening. LOL

A moron friend of mine was trying to build his own PC for the first time. Kinda guy that never listens to a thing you tell him. Anyway I tried to discourage him but he went ahead and did it - hell if I could do it he sure as hell could too. HE is very reluctant to read any instructions for anything. As a last note I told him not to forget to put some silicon compound inbetween the h/s and CPU. Well he figured that anything with silicone in it would do the trick and also figured "the slipperier the better" and wound up using Astroglide (TM) Personal Lubriucant as his h/s compound. Didn't work too well. He couldn't get into windows at all until I went over everything he did with him.

PS - Afterwards he blamed me for telling him to use a silicon compound on his chip...sigh.

I had two idiots try and put USB plugs into the ethernet port...that didn't work so well, even though the guys did manage to get them to work. Even though I didn't think it was quite as funny as the guy who plugged his Xbox up to his PC via the ethernet port and expected to play computer games on his Xbox and vica versa.

i had one guy (a very nice guy) call to ask why his new system i had just built him was acting up

turns out that it worked great for about 10min, but then the screen turned all black and just said "windows XP"
i asked him to move his mouse and see what happened... "WOW!! that fixed it" he happily exclaimed.

I have this friend....A long time ago when we were both in junior high we were in a small school, so when they started offering a computer class these computers were slow win 98 comps...this friend wanted to clear off some space on the hard drive to make room....He started deleting files that he thougt were unneeded....he ended up deleting the windows folder :Q It took the school 3 days to get the computer running again becase he screwd it up so bad...and they need some things off it.

I had a friend try to build his own computer. When mounting his mobo to his case, he didn't use the brass risers. His case also had a 2 different heights where the mobo was mounted. The mobo was screwed directly to the case, including the slanted part. Funniest looking mount i've ever seen.

Had a woman call in minutes after buying a new PC with an LCD monitor... flipping about how her LCD didn't work and the last one she bought (at another store) did EXACTLY the same thing.
I calmly walked her through flipping the 'on' switch on the side of the monitor then told her to look on the front panel.

woman: "Oh, there's a button that has a circle with a line through it!"
Me: "Press it"
Woman: ".....oh... its working."
