I imagine if we interacted with each other and grouped together with a different topic than politics, we'd find commonality that betrays our party affiliations. What we see in ourselves and others need not be so inflexible. It's killing us.

And this election having played out over social media means that the affiliation "killing us" has been exponentially amplified.

Why do people continue to blame school for what parents failed to do at home? Parents are the first line of defense when it comes to children and their attitudes towards anything in life as they learn their biases at home first. If parents don't care and the kids know it then they will also tend to reflect a similar attitude. Children who have legitimate hindrances to learning should be identified early and placed in a special program that address these issues by altering the learning style to meet their needs. Normal students do not need to be penalized by these underperformers.

My youngest son had issues in school and his grades suffered but his mother was terminally ill and he had to deal with the knowledge that she was going to die on a daily basis. Once she passed and the stress was lifted he began to pull out of it and returned to being an A/B student. There was nothing that school could do to address his situation and I had to help him as a parent which is my job and I was working rotating shifts raising them. Stop placing blame in the wrong place and stop demanding that schools lower their standards so kids with low standards won't have to step up their game to pass.

My mother passed away when I was in 12th and my father was too busy working. Despite that, it was mainly who my brothers chose to hang out with. School had nothing to do with it. I have a high IQ and my one brother's is slightly higher than mine. But because of poor decisions, he is now in and out of jail constantly. Environment does play a role but people are ultimately responsible for their own actions. Anyone who says otherwise is a coward and a part of the problem in society.

Thank you for sharing your experience with us. I did 9th and 10th grade at John Bartram (started at Battle Creek HS in Beaufort, SC), a short stint at an honors school on the university campus, a short stint at west Philly high and then ended up at southern in the star class before moving back to Florida where I finished high school.

While it is very true that parental involvement is very important in a child's education if you have 3 or 4 assholes in a class they can easily fuck up the education of everyone else. Also some schools are just outright subpar, I am an atheist and I send my kids to expensive Catholic school because they are the only private schools around here and I could not in good conscience send my kids to our local public schools. A few years back the valedictorian of the one in my district couldn't pass the exit exam. As hard as I push my kids with their schoolwork there is no way they would be receiving anything close to a comparable education. Not to mention that all of their classmates have parents who are also involved and push their kids because they are paying a lot of money for it and problem kids can and are handled swiftly. Public schools often don't have a ton of choices when dealing with problem students and teachers often have to teach to the lowest common denominator. Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying that all public schools are bad but the ones around here sure as hell are and I would go hungry if I had to in order to ensure my kids got a better education than they offer.

I understand where you are coming from and those children who misbehave learned it at home where there was no discipline instilled in them from the beginning. If they'd learned good behavior at an early age that situation wouldn't of happened. I agree in that the schools should have more latitude in disciplining students without abusing them and disruptive children should be expelled from class to protect the learning environment.
