Every time I've done a Black Friday, it's always been fairly quiet. One year, some guy tried to cut the line at Best Buy (which went past another store around the building to the back loading dock), but literally everybody made him go to the back. I was #8 or 9 in line that time. Another year, the type of people who typically cause problems in a public setting, were threatening people because they wanted $5 kid's PJs at Walmart. Police were called and those people were forced to behave.

I went to Best Buy last year on Thanksgiving around 7pm and grabbed a nice Dell laptop for $250 (half price) and everybody just stood in the line as it moved forward. You got to the counter with whatever you had off the shelf, told them if you wanted one of the cheap laptops, paid and left.

Yeah, it definitely depends on where you go, along with what nathanddrews said. You can't watch that video and simply think those types of situations are in every city across the nation (unless you lack thinking ability). That type of crap didn't happen in the area where I grew up.

That being said, Black Friday is a bunch of overhyped crap IMO.

Yeah the $100 3DS was tempting but it wasn't worth braving the cold or the crowds knowing most vendors probably only had 2-3 for like a hundred people. And even if they had 20 I can just imagine the first person in line buys ever single one of them.

Just not worth it.

lets see

pumpkin pie, red wine, turkey, stuffing, mashed potatoes, home, hearth, family, card games, laughter, happiness, memories.

Or

freeze my ass off in a walmart parking lot, then get pushed and shoved through the door and punched in the face by total strangers.

You've got to be fucking kidding me. Black Friday is the dumbest fucking thing ever.

Black Friday was so much more fun before it was a "thing". It's now just a spectacle that the retailers have completely ruined.

It's consumerism run amok. Seeing such depravity towards our fellow man fills me with disgust and great sadness.

These guys speak truth.

OP - why exactly does this make you ashamed to be an american? You didn't commit any of the depicted acts, did you? If not, why do the acts of other people impact how you feel about yourself and the U.S. as a country? All countries include an enomous number of relatively irrational people. That fact doesn't mean (IMO) that a rational upstanding citizen of one of those countries should be ashamed of his affiliation with that country just because some dumb dumb that happens to be in the same country does something stupid.

As for Black Friday - like most here I feel that its a stupid activity. Nonetheless I usually find myself drawn out on Black Friday to people watch. In certain parts of the country (western VA, for example), there are some really interesting people that come down out of the hills to participate in the shopping festivities. For example, I once saw a whole family of hillbillies (4 full generations - grandparents, parents, kids, and grandkids), where everyone in the family was garbed head to toe in camouflage. Each of them also had some form of unnatural hair color (blue, green, pink, flame orange, etc). Observing those people is a bit like observing the elusive giant squid or Moby Dick - i.e., they are legendary both for their appearance and for the impression they make on people who encounter them.

I seriously don't get it. You still gotta pay for the stuff. Why fight over it? Americans fighting over the ability to buy something.. makes no damn sense.

Only the poor ones

The rest of us sip brandy in our high towers laughing at the peasants fighting over scraps as we click the "PRIME shipping" option in our underpants. This is only after we wake up at a reasonable hour of course.

in europe ...
So rioting after soccer (er, football) matches is better than fighting over cheap TVs? (Not that it excuses anything, but we Americans hardly have a monopoly on "stupid human tricks"...)

I'm willing to bet these idiots would burn the American flag over burning American currency. But I digress.

I thought that since many shops open on Thanksgiving now it would deter much of the large crowds on black Friday.

Anyone notice that most of the items for sale on black Friday are Chinese Knock-offs. You'll hardly ever see a Sony TV sold for cheap. Normally, it's the cheap brands.

No thanks.

This is exactly the reason stores do tickets/wristbands and are very strict on the limits. One per ticket, one ticket per person.

You're right, cheap no-brand Chinese made knock-offs, nothing worth buying. ;)

Black Friday needs to be shutdown. 5pm on fucking Thanksgiving now
Some states are dealing with this. Both Rhode Island and Massachusetts dont allow stores to be open on Thanksgiving which pushes their opening to 1am on Friday which is a start.

So are people going out for sales bargains and happening to get into fights...or are they going out for the fights and just accidentally getting involved in a sale?

Kind of like football hooliganism over here. An excuse for an adrenalin rush and a punch-up?
