Where will you buy electronics locally then? I only have a Circuit City near me and I'm sure it's one of the stores being closed (small market), so I'm pretty screwed if I need something and can't wait for shipping.

IIRC, the ONLY thing I've bought from either store in the past 5 years is COD2 when it first came out, (had CC match BB's price-they were out of stock) and recently, an ink cartridge that Office Depot was out of stock on-and had CC match the price)

I'm not much of a "newest, latest, greatest tech" kind of guy...I still only have ONE television...a 27 inch Sony Trinitron that I bought (not from either store) about 1996, my stereo was bought at the old chain "Handy Andy's" about 1990, and my PC is built mostly of parts from NewEgg, with a few that I got from Fry's once upon a time...
I NEED to seriously upgrade my PC, but none of the part would come from CC or BB anyway...

I don't know where you live josh, but for me, a drive to one of the Fry's in the area (closest one about 80 miles) is perfectly acceptable if I really need something and can't wait for the shipping.

I stopped shopping at CC because I hate MIRs & CC seems to refuse to stop using them. BB dropped them a few years ago as did Office Max.

You guys better spend your GC's fast!

Just got back from spending mine, thanks OP.

I'm kind of like that, I'm not buying the latest and greatest, there are no $1000+ TV's in my future, and my computers are bought piece by piece from the usual online places. The last thing of any consequence that I bought from CC was a console adapter to install a car radio in, 2-3 years ago.

But I'm also in Josh's situation, this is a podunk market, there's no BB within 100 miles, and no Fry's within 200 miles. This CC hasn't even been open for a full year. It's nice to at least have the option to go buy overpriced electronics here locally :)

I hope they don't close the one by me! There is usually a fair amount of people in it so I don't think it's doing all that bad. Best Buy is 45 minutes away and I don't like BB at all anyway.

CC is awesome for PC game specials. And they have good DVD sales at times. That's about all that I buy from them.

They just opened two new The Cities (or whatever they're calling them) on the West side of Houston over the last 4 months.

Circuit City still peddles MIRs on their sale items.

Best Buy doesn't.

That was a major policy change by BB a few years back, and since they made that decision to abandon rebates on sale items, they've done quite well.

We have a shopping center here in my city that houses CC and Linens and Things which is also going out of business. That place is going to look like a ghost town. Sucks for our local economy.

That's what they get for sucking.

They suck less than Best Buy... but that doesn't say much I guess.

I have to agree with this. Once CC got rid of the commissioned sales folks, it became tolerable to shop there. Also, their prices have been lower than BB's lately.

I agree with this. I hated shopping at CC ever since. My sales people at BB are much more helpful.

Wait...what?

We disagree, and apparently agree to disagree. All is well.

There is a bit more to it than that. IMO it comes from having good ideas but absolutely horrible execution. A while back cnn money rated the top 10 worst managed companies and CC was at #4 for things like firing their most experienced employees, rolling out sweeping store changes at holiday times (causing major issues at stores) and for a register system that they spent a ridiculous amount of money on only to have it flop (only something like 30% of their stores actually got the new system even though they paid for 100% of the equipment)

I bet black Friday at CC may really be BLACK if they shut off the power!

I never bought much there besides the occasional good deal on DVDs, CDs or PC games.

I did like the way they display most of their HDTVs on one giant wall or 2 though. Unlike the cramped HDTV isles in a BB. As if most people stand 2 feet from their 52 inch HDTVs.

circuit city is stupid. Last time I bought something there, they sold me something for instore pickup, but didn't have it in stock. They have that policy that if you don't get your stuff in 30 minutes you get 30 bucks or something like that, so I got free money out of them. Actually I took pity on them because the item was still listed as available for instore pick up, so I could have done this a few more times.

i hit up a bunch of circuit cities today looking for a particular deal. each one was crawling with sales people. the newest store was almost a nice place to be. can't make up for the crappiness of the oldest store, though. dark and maze like inside is not a way to run a store.

Yeah, CC has the lowest prices on the new releases of PC Games, DVDs and CDs. Damn, won't even the option to price match at BB anymore.

BB has copied them in some stores.

If you look at most of the posts here, it's easy to see why they have problems. Just seems like they do not know how to run a store. I think they did do one thing right. They opened a shit ton of stores in an attempt to take market share, but their lack of an ability to establish some customer loyalty doomed them to fail. BB has much better brand loyalty than CC. Plus the name Firedog sounds stupid.

I really miss the dark maze.. I thought it fit great for an electronics store.. Isolated room for car audio.. isolated room for speakers.. isolated dark stereo receiver area.. light area for cds and dvds.. light area for appliances.. but then again, that was when their stock was doing well..

Whoever decided that they should remodel and become a cookie cutter office depot/best buy/staples store is an idiot.

didn't read much of the thread - is this a good time to go into there for deals?

Don't think so yet, but soon.

Also would depend on if your store is closing or not.
