I am writing to inform anyone who is a parent about some unfair coaches.

Recently I had to shatter my 10-year-old's heart because his football coach decided that he and my nephew were not good enough for the team.

I put my son on the Genoa youth football team for two reasons: 1. DeKalb does not have a football team and 2. He loves football so much.

Being that this was his first time playing, his coach didn't want new players on the team that didn't understand how to play the game.

He simple gave up on them after only four practices.

Tell me, how can you make that assumption after only four practices?

And how else are they going to learn if they are not given the opportunity?

How can you deny kids from playing? These are children, not NFL players.

Apparently this coach only cares about winning, and how does he even know whether these kids were going to be good players or not.

I have even asked myself is there prejudice involved in this, seeing that my son and nephew were the only Hispanics on the team.

I am completely outraged and now not only are these kids' hearts broken, but I have lost $150 and have to return his helmet and pads and pick up his football jersey.

Why should I? Who wants a jersey from a team they can't even play for?

Lupita Estrada

DeKalb

Sigh. i wonder if this women thought maybe just maybe he was not good enough to make the fucking team!? ugh.

They're kids. Sounds like the mom is the one who's upset about it. I bet the kids will get over it quickly and just go play football with some friends or wait until they can play it in school.

Sports at that age arent really about winning or being the best team. They are about learning the fundamentals, team work, self confidence and so on. I agree with the mother.

Of course the race card is there too, I noticed. Geez can't someone even make a complaint without digging that one up?

I understand cutting for teams, but they should do it before the family has to invest $150 in it. For some people that's a good hunk of cash. That's more than a week's worth of food for my wife and I and we eat pretty well. If you're living closer to the edge but want to do something nice for your kid that $150 could have been more of a stretch.

4 practices are not enough to get cut.

Furthermore, there should be NO cutting from a freaking TEN year old's team. If you sign up, you should be on the team. Whether the kid PLAYS much or not, that's a different story, but at that age, it's not costing the team or a school anything to have any amount of kids on the roster....the parents buy all the equipment and transport the kids to the games and practice. All the coach has to do is show up himself.

This isn't a high school. Not the same situation at all. This isn't coddling the kids so they don't think they're losers. This is simply dumb.

edit: I'm fine with middle school teams and high school teams cutting players....they have a finite amount of uniforms and room on the bus for travel...since all that is provided by the school in those cases.
Around here, if you want to be on a little league team, which is what this situation was, you buy your kid the equipment, fill out the forms, pay your money, and he's on the team. He might not play much if he's too small or simply not good enough, but he still gets to practice and dress out for the games.

One more edit: How's that for post #10,000?

My point was did you even bother to read the fucking article? Like maybe the first sentence...

Note the text I bolded in your original post.

From the article:

Recently I had to shatter my 10-year-old's heart because his football coach decided that he and my nephew were not good enough for the team.

I thought the entire point of youth sports was for children to learn the game? How is someone supposed to learn the game if they're cut from the team after four practices?

I was trying to stay out of this and not take a side, but I'm going to have to agree with you on this one. The kid is 10... the fact that he's part of a team, whether he sees much playtime or not, is probably enough for him. So what if he's not good? It's not like it's affecting the coach... just let him play here and there and let it go at that.

Is there not another pee-wee team he could join? I understand your complaint though. Hopefully the tyke gets to play some ball.

Children's sports don't suck. The football league that allows teams to cut ten year old's suck.

That's what I'm talking about. Kids like that you put on the kickoff team and the return teams. Let them play if you're blowing someone out or being blown out. Winning is not the prime motivator at this age, or at least, it shouldn't be.

I'm going back and forth on this, but let the kid play. It sounds like he needs every second away from his mother than he can get if he's going to have any shot at being normal.

They cut 10 year olds? WTF, let them play, learn and have fun. Who cares about winning at this age. Pathetic.

It would depend on what type of league the kids were signed up to play in. Where I grew up we had a competitive league that had cuts and a recreation league that let everyone play. The competitive league stated when you signed up that there would be tryouts and cuts.

Not sure how this situation went down exactly, but I agree 4 practices is not enough for a competitive league unless every other player understands the rules and basic strategy and some just don't understand anything. Then it's pretty easy to make the cuts. Another problem we don't have information for is was the parent told there would be cuts when they signed up? If so, maybe they need to take the child and teach him the game and some strategy for next year.
