This is why you treat Newegg reviews with a grain of salt

1 out of 5 eggsWARNING-SATA connections

Pros: Bought for $17.99 with free shipping. Arrived two days after I purchased it. Newegg rocks!

Cons: I have an older Compaq that only has IDE connector pins. I was angry when I tried to hook it up because I discovered that LG switched over to SATA connectors only. I had bought an LG back in 2008 & five years later it is still working, so I went out on a limb to add a second drive to my computer. That drive has IDE connectors, as was standard at the time. Make sure to also purchase an IDE to SATA motherboard converter if you have an older tower as I do before considering buying this. If you have a newer tower, you should be fine. This explains my negative review.

Other Thoughts: Now I have to wait an additional few days to even test out the drive thanks to the conversion to SATA. Ugh! Once again, the manufacturers have broken something that didn't need fixing!

Kid needs to get out of his moms basement from time to time.

I bet he is still paying CS 1.6 on a single core and 1 gig of memory on windows xp.

No. Wouldn't it make more sense that he's out doing things other than deal with computers if he didn't even know that SATA has been the standard for 8 years?

Guess he didn't look at the pictures or the details section either. I hate to see his review when he tries to put a 1155 socket CPU into his 775 cpu socket

No, that is a decent NewEgg review. He rated himself somewhat low on the tech level scale. I believe him. He knows enough about computers to add a new harddrive, but not enough to keep up with current connectors. The reviews that you gotta watch out for are the highest rated tech level ones. "Bought this HDD and it got lost by UPS. Seagate sucks. 1 out of 5 eggs." or "Ordered the wrong CPU socket by mistake. NewEgg wants a small restocking fee for my ignorance. This product is garbage. 1 out of 5 eggs." and the best "Love the product and it was great but NewEgg support was rude. 1 out of 5 eggs."

Yeah, you do have to take a grain of salt when reading NE reviews. It seems half the reviewers have no clue what they are doing or talking about. However the other half, that know what they are talking about, can be quite helpful in their info. You have to know who is good and bad and that usually comes down to your own knowledge. If you know a good amount about PCs then you can easily tell the clueless from the knowledgeable. Unfortunately the less PC savy people cant tell good info from bad info read the reviews and believe everything posted there.

I guess that's why I almost never read them. :)

Yeah, I generally don't pay too much attention to them, except to note the x/5 star rating for products that have hundreds of reviews. (I assume there's a few absurd negatives, and a few fanboy positives to balance them out.)

Reading the newegg customer reviews is still important. Sometimes you get real useful info. I posted a review about a plasma TV back 8 years ago and people found it very helpful.

But yeah.. the review posted by user in OP's post is kind of funny... he must've been in the jungle for several years.

That was a good review in that it intelligently assesses and depicts the situation. Thus its easy to figure out who to blame.
It's obvious from reading that this review is borne of frustration, old-fashioned connectors are to blame, and "If you have a newer tower, you should be fine."

That review might serve a purpose to potential buyers by reminding them to check their connectors, otherwise it just documents his oops moment.

I tend to favor Newegg for computer part reviews just because I presume reviewers there are more tech savvy than Amazon.

I actually browse for parts on NewEgg and determine exactly what I want and then buy them on Amazon. I have an Amazon Prime account so the extremely fast shipping encourages that a lot. Sadly, Amazon's search parameters are awful for computer parts. I know exactly what socket and features I want on a motherboard, why can't I input those Amazon? NewEgg makes this simple to find exactly what I want so I can copy paste that product into Amazon and buy it.

amazon isn't a computer parts store, newegg it's their primary business... of course they are going to have a better computer parts search engine build.

It isn't just for computer parts though. Every category of item has the features broken down and you can sort by them. You can't do that with Amazon. They have generic sorting like manufacture, cost, rating, and department. Those aren't very helpful for any item that might have multiple features.

You should re-read my post. "newegg, it's their primary business"
This begot their good search and it would just be good sense to use it for the other things.

Amazon started for books. No excuse, but valid reason their search is so ill-suited.

I don't mind the fact that his tech level is low or that he is upset that IDE is dead. What bothers me is that he can't even read the item title:

Black SATA Model GH24NS95 - OEM

Yeah... what else is new. Most highly positive online reviews are from friends and employees of the manufacturer, and most highly negative reviews are from morons who couldn't figure out how to set up the product.

That doesn't jive with what I see on newegg and never did, UB.

check out the reviews for the intel gigabit network cards for example, and then those for a lot of the syba products. the intel gigabit cards are hugely positive rated, by real people... and the syba stuff is rightfully hugely negative by real people. two good examples. this is all ive seen on things, not counting the idiot factor which is always there (and overflowing on things like the killer nic reviews)

I'm of the opinion that this is his own fault for not reading carefully both the description of the item and the details of the item. I mean, come on, it says that it is SATA right at the top:
LG 24X DVD Burner - Bare Drive 24X DVD+R 8X DVD+RW 8X DVD+R DL 24X DVD-R 6X DVD-RW 16X DVD-ROM 48X CD-R 24X CD-RW 48X CD-ROM Black SATA Model GH24NS95 - OEM

Also, while he says that his tech level is "Somewhat Low" using an SATA to IDE adaptor isn't that big of a deal and he should have known that he needed one since he had replaced drives before and knew he had IDE connectors.

"stopped working" and "work fine" are usually mutually exclusive.

I still have and use floppies every few days, actually. I actually got a 100 pack of new old stock still in wrapper 3M 1.44MB floppy disks for $1 at the goodwill computer store, and another 50 pack of sony ones for $1 later. Even found an 11 pack (one 'free') of 1.2MB 5.25" floppies there for $1 and yes I still use those too, look in my sig. :)

They still work fine, even on systems that do not have floppy drive controllers. I have a couple 1.44MB USB floppy drives for just this reason... they don't work well for most UEFI bioses though, but for those I either use their in windows flash utilities or a memory stick.

The thing that bothers me, is how there's no "test" for the tech level on there. Everyone is amazingly a tech expert. Also, anything negative typically gets poor ratings, just because it's negative, regardless of how much objective data they provide. If it's a negative review, it's more informative than a positive one IMHO, because it raises awareness levels. Why people think that a negative review = bad review is annoying to me. Too much subjective fanboy ratings on there, really.

I typically have to read 50% or about 50 of the reviews for a product before I can get a real feel for how good (or bad) it is, and that's only as a last resort when finalizing my decisions after the initial stages of researching reviews and comparisons to look for outlier issues that were otherwise unmentioned from the professionals.

People have a difficult time detaching themselves from their experiences and where the fault actually lies. This guy was just ignorant and essentially blamed the product for it. Those types of reviews get zero weight in my personal decision making process, but they do also provide information to the layman about what not to do; which is useful as well.
