This is why Verizon 4G phones have data connectivity problems

Interesting read, as all Verizon's phones have these random disconnect issues and transition errors.

The "hiccups" are authentication failures - the new scheme is extremely particular about failed attempts to authenticate a device. Your device authenticates regularly, "checking in" with the network to ensure you're still supposed to be connected. When your device fails to authenticate on the network (for any reason - and there are a gamut of possibilities), Verizon will kick you off the data side (not voice, though), either 3G or 4G. At this point, you notice you no longer have a data connection, and throw your phone at the nearest wall.

Oh, so much fail in a single posting.

Let me ask this, if LTE is an open spec, that ANYONE can download, why does he have to rely on forum posts and "things gathered from the net?"

I would be impressed if the author even knew the difference between an IMSI attach and a GUTI attach.

But hey, why let things like proof get in the way of journalism.

The Bionic and Thunderbolt are supposed to be especially bad. You lose 4G thats it. Would be faster to turn the phone off and on again as opposed to waiting.

Not sure about the Bionic, but the Tbolt would lose 3G too. If you had it configured for LTE, and the connection dropped, you'd often find yourself on 1X and have to reboot. There was a dialer code to flip back to the 'old' method of CDMA2000 only, but then you'd only get 3G. Lot of people have to do this during a few of Verizon's LTE outtages.

I have the Thunderbolt with up to date VZW firmware. Although data seems to drop frequently, and Verizon recent admission gives me validation of my observation, I honestly don't have any problems with it coming back on its own relatively quickly.

If I'm impatient, I'll toggle airplane mode. If it doesn't come back after airplane mode, it doesn't come back after a reboot.

Rebooting is the last thing I want to do if I'm trying to use the device, since mine takes a good 2 minutes to start up. (It's ridiculous, and hopefully newer models and OS revisions address this.)

Here to stick my foot in my mouth. I was having majorly sucky data tonight on 4G, and when I forced it to 3G, it wouldn't acquire a network data connection at all. Then I tried the airplane mode thing--repeatedly--and it didn't have any effect.

So I left it in 3G, and rebooted it. 3 1/2 minutes later (I timed it this time--even more ridiculous than I expected), I got a 3G connection. So far so good, but I haven't moved from this spot, either.

Uggh. I wish they'd get this fixed. These Thunderbolt reboot times are going to get me down, and I still have 14 months before my upgrade.
