Congrats. I've always thought NASA would be a cool place to work.

What is your field of study?

Computer Vision and Image Processing. Computer Science. :)

Nice. Is this at JPL? (That's where they do the rover stuff, isn't it?)

I did a project in school where I worked at Johnson Space Center for a couple months -- did some stuff with image processing software to look for cracks in the shuttle while in orbit (to prevent something like the Columbia accident happening again). Unpaid, but I got class credit, and I still get to put "NASA" on my resume. :)

Yup it's the Jet Propulsion Lab. They're sending resources to my university; I'm not flying over to Cal-Tech.

Congrats, Go Bulls!

I was going to ask if it was @ Ames (Mountain View). They have (had?) a mockup mars landscape for testing there.

That's awesome. I had a friend in college who worked for NASA for a year before deciding to go back to school and change careers. He said minus certain bureaucratic issues that caused him to leave, NASA was simply awesome.

One of my friend's sons did the same thing, he went to work for Loreal for a couple of years, then switched to IBM, he's making ~$150K/year now...

He even got me a JPL hat while he was there. (Hint, hint, I miss that ball cap too, lost it on a Sea Doo ride).

Just remember to place a easter egg in the code so when it meets a alien on Mars it shouts out "All your base are belong to us" and then it proceeds to punch said alien.

Is this through the REU program? I did one of those at a university in southern illinios last summer. It was a great experience (and paid pretty well considering).
Have fun with it and congrats.

They're covering housing, food, and travel expenses on top of $320 per week (pre-taxes). The program is set up to be friendly with my school's normal class scheduling, so I'll finish about a week before the fall semester starts. SWEET DEAL!

We'll be writing computer vision based AI for the Mars rovers, essentially. I had to sign an NDA, but I'll see what I can do about sharing some screenshots on AnandTech if you guys want ;)

OMG, this is epic. Combines two of my passions, computers and space exploration. What is your major, CS? Grad/Undergrad?
