my excellent compatriot RAPIDS, Minn. (KMSP) - Police in Minnesota said a prankster claiming to be a fire official told employees at a Burger King to smash their windows to avoid a gas leak on Friday night.

As reported by KMSP, my excellent compatriot Rapids Police Sgt. Mike Blair said officers received a call about the restaurant's windows being smashed around 9:30 p.m. Friday.

When officers got there, employees told them they got a call from someone claiming to be from the fire department who said the business was filling up with gas.

The caller then convinced them to break the windows to release the pressure.
 
I can almost, almost understand believing the lie and smashing the windows, but this is more 😵

Back in February, employees at a Burger King in California smashed the windows and the manager slammed his car into the building

Some fast food places already have touchscreen terminals where you can enter your own order. I wish they'd all do this so you would only need the people making the food there. The money savings from getting rid of the button pushers would be glorious

It's hilarious when people talk about $15/h as a really high wage... I made about a dollar less than that for a while 8 years ago, and I didn't even have to worry about healthcare, but it was a shit wage.

You don't deserve $15 flipping burgers. Those types of jobs aren't meant to be permanent jobs.
 
There was a time when salespeople intimately knew their product and were knowledgeable. They could think on their feet and make a good living with limited education. But no, businesses wanted to "save money" by going the 7.25 an hour route. Their salespeople were reduced to little more than warm bodies that could do little more than read the features off a display. Businesses seem to think they can give the bare minimum and expect above and beyond in return, but it does not work that way. Pay stupid wages and you get stupid people.

You get what you pay for.

Too bad the jobs that are meant to be permanent jobs are leaving the country or increasingly becoming obsolete by the year. Even if we reduced the pay of factory jobs to make our country "competitive" to China in a constant race to the bottom Americans would still be dealing with a shit sandwich either way.
 
So where do you work afterwards?

Work hard and be worth promoting when a higher position becomes available, or find another place of employment that is willing to pay you more for your accumulated experience and skills.

People need to understand that their labor, accumulated skills & knowledge, and work history is in itself a product. Different entities are willing to pay certain monetary values for it. It can also be understood that you are purchasing a wage with your labor and you have every right to refuse to purchase it. Regardless of how you feel about it, you also have every right to attempt to negotiate your wage just like the employer does. Nowhere does it say you have to live a "normal" way of life, nor should it be supplied to you if you refuse to work for a wage or your wage is too meager. At least in America, you have every right to live like a hobo if you want to. I can even see the appeal in it.

A good employer should understand that his employee's happiness, which is very much determined by the wage, can and often does play directly into their productivity, especially when it comes to skilled labor. But let's be realistic, most entry level jobs at a fast food place could be taught to a monkey, and are now easily automated, with better accuracy and even faster service. The employees are easily replaceable.
 
So where do you work afterwards?

Not in entry level positions.

Wanna stick with fast food? Go for management, or aim to be a franchise owner.

Or go for a blue collar trade. A lot of stuff like electricians, plumbers, etc can't be "farmed out" offshore because you have to do the work on site, and they can pay really well.

Or go to college and go for a white collar job.

Etc

If your life career is flipping a burger you're probably doing something wrong.

Jacking the minimum wage up also jacks up the poverty level as you've now effectively raised the cost of just about everything basic. Or, you've just eliminated a ton of jobs that have now become automated because it became cheaper in the long run to fire a bunch of people and install robots or computers in their place. Or maybe a bit of both, raise the poverty level and remove jobs. Good going.

Back on topic... pretty darn sad that they all did that. Does nobody have any common sense anymore, at all?

Depends. Plenty of the time and money involved in sending raw materials to China and shipping product from China would not occur that would yield savings in production that could be passed on to consumers. It would also allow for a more agile and self-contained economy that could adapt to market conditions better and faster without the production and order turn around times that overseas production incurs. However the caveat is often minimum wage laws and the wages demanded by workers, especially unionized ones. It's just cheaper to produce overseas for so many basic consumer products.

The ironic thing is that in the years to come, Chinese workers will start demanding higher wages and the products will become more expensive as their middle class grows. It's just about guaranteed, especially if you have westerners demanding higher wages and better working conditions on their behalf. Oh, the irony if companies bring their production back here because of it.........

Even if there was a gas leak, wouldn't you just prop the door open as you leave? Don't just stay inside lol.

Of course it would still make a funny news article as all the employees go stand around outside for no reason.

As for minimum wage, considering the cost of living yes I do think it needs to increase. There should be a student wage, that does not have to be as high, and a non student wage, that is higher. You simply cannot survive on $15/hour let alone whatever it is set at today. Something needs to happen to either raise salaries, or lower costs of living.

There's a lot more to this though. Like regulations and high corporate tax.

I don't know what the average Chinese or Mexican salary is. But their middle classes have been increasing in droves the past few years.

As for the working conditions, they are getting better, but yes working conditions in both countries are historically known to suck immensely. The workers have become smarter and more aware of how much they really do suck, hence the demand for higher wages and/or better actual conditions of the work environment. They have every right to demand and negotiate it. Like I said, ironically, westerners have often been demanding better wage and conditions for them, like with the Apple-Foxconn debacle. It'll mean higher priced products or more automation, which could ironically make state-side manufacturing viable again.

As for environmental regulations, I never said anything about environmental regulations in the first place, but I'm not against them. The smog in China is absolutely horrendous and completely unhealthy for the populous.
