This is what a 247 foot tree looks like.

How do they know how old it is without counting the rings?

I would think it is an estimate based off of the known growth rate of the species of tree, combined with the verified age of comparable samples that had fallen or been cleared.

Looks like a giant ganja bud. I visited those trees. I think the big one is called el capitan or something.

General Sherman. El Capitan is one of the rock faces in Yosemite.

There is actually now a sequoia that is taller than General Sherman, but I believe it's location is still secret and it has not been named.

edit: OK, reading dawp's link, there have been several sequoia's and trees taller than general sherman. Could be that what I was talking about was another sequoia in the same park that was actually taller than Sherman, or maybe one that was, indeed, "bigger"?

not sure...

I've been to Sequoia/Kings Canyon NPs several times. There's just something jaw-dropping awesome about a 275 foot tall tree that's more than 25 feet in diameter.

Here's my pic of the General Sherman tree from last Summer.

There are taller trees around it but the Sherman tree is just massive. The Sherman, like most of the really big sequoias, had it's top knocked off by wind or lightning.

Also, is sequioa the shortest english word to use all five vowels?

Man, just think about this. When that tree was a little seedling just sprouting from the ground, the Egyptian empire was in it's New Kingdom phase, with Ramesses II being the leader.

yep...was thinking the same thing. Mind bending to say the least
