I just upgraded(well thought I did) from a $13 coolermaster to a Alpha Pal with a bigger Sunon fan and it is running hotter.

Coolermaster:
lite load:41-42C
Full load:45-46C

Alpha pal:
lite load=46-47C
Full load:51-52C

Only thing thats different is the coolermaster fan was bl*wing air on the heatsink and the Alpha is su**ing air from the heatsink could this be the problem?.

Right now I got my AXIA@1.2 1.75v and it is running 48C and I ain't doing much. Where the coolermaster got around 40-41C. Oh yeah I have no case fans because I keep the side panel off.

why is it sucking air? I'm pretty sure the fan is supposed to blow air onto the heatsink. Especially if you don't have any case fans. Also you should probably check to see if it's seated on there and if there's enough or too much thermal paste...etc.

Shouldnt CPU fans always blow air into the heatsink? I always thought that's the case...

Are you sure you didnt install the new fan backwards?

is the clip oriented properly iwth the pressure point corresponding with the cpu core?

And

NO, the fan is supposed to suck on Alpha's... adn they usually work better that way save when case airflow is against the cpu fan.

Officially the Alphas are suppose to suck air. A lof of people including myself, have air blowing down on the heatsink. My temps go down by 1 - 2C. Not much but every little bit helps. Did you apply the thermal paste properly and clean off the thermal pad from the Coolermaster? Even oils from your fingers are enough to cut the efficiency of your thermal paste.

As for Coolermasters, don't knock them. They have been in the OEM business for a very long time. For a basic, quiet heatsink they do the job well. In fact when I RMAed my retail TBird and Taisol heatsink, I got back a tray TBird (warranty still honored) plus a Coolermaster heatsink.

Well coolermasters ain't bad but you would think a Alpha would do a bit better. Yes I did rub the paste on with my finger but would that really be the problem?

How old is your alpha? does ti come with plastic feet?

Make absolute sure that the clip on the alpha is oriented properly... that's usually the cause of problems iwth pal6035s and pep66s.

I'm guessing you've got a PAL6035, right?

it sounds like theres a problem somewhere.. you can try flipping the fan over to see if it helps!

i thought alphas always sucked air due to that shroud they always have around the heatsink. every other cpu hs/fan always blew air in

well I replied paste and turned the fan around without much help. It's kinda sad a coolermaster outbeating a Alpha.

The coolermaster doesnt even have a copper insert and the Alpha does. I think I will prob resell unless I can figure out whats wrong.

i think mike is asking if the heatsink is mounted properly and oriented correctly with the ZIF.....i didnt like the alpha i had.....i run the thermalright sk-6 and the taisols...they are both good heatsinks.....but you say you now have the fan blowing air into the HS right?....that should be the way to best cool it

Rubbing it on with your fingers:Bad idea, if finger grease was a good thermal solution you'd bet everyone here would know about it :)

Some HSFs blow, some suck. His is supposed to suck. No biggie.

Yah, remove ALLL traces of tim of the HSF, it may take some elbow grease. Then apply a layer of compound of around 2-3 layers of paper thick over the CPU DIE and noithing else.

P.S. Why did you want it cooler? Higher OC? Your mobo may report higher temps, but it may in fact be lower. Whenever you suck air, temps SEEM higher. Doesnt mean they are. Just like ppl say I PUT A 80 MAN BLOWING ACROSS MY HSF AND IT LOWERED TEMPS BY 10 DEGREES. Er sorry, you lowered the tempmonitor by 10 degrees, maybe not the proc at all.
