<sigh> Ending a sentence with a preposition is a no-no. You CAN end a sentence with a proposition however...or would the proposition BE the sentence? :hmm:

What was the OP thinking of?

OR, Of what was the OP thinking?

:p

Commuters would pay up to $130 per month, or $1,500 in a year, if the tolls last that long.

Yes, because government - from local to federal - has a long and proud history of voluntarily giving up a steady stream of revenue once its claws are firmly sunk in.

Get used to it. It's just another way for cities to raise money. Saying "it's for mass transportation" is just another lie. Remember when the reason for state lotteries was that the money would go to education? Ha.

Someone has to pay for the disastrous policies of the city. Now that all of the wealthy people are leaving, the tax base is gone. Taxes will continue to be outsourced to non-residents as long as it takes for the government to get its fill. Too bad San Fran's mayor hasn't visited the Missouri History Museum here in St. Louis to see how well the current SF policies will work.

Toll roads are stupid.. they slow everything down (even if electronic gates) and it costs more to maintain the toll system than to simply tax everyone with the already existent taxes in the first place... If the certain department (transit in this case) needs the money just raise the bloody taxes... If the tax hikes are voted down then folks can damn well live with shitty traffic jammed roads.

If your city doesn't have a population base to support its infrastructure via taxes in the first place then let the stupid thing burn and start over (edit: or sell it to coke or Disney and make the whole downtown a private amusement park/mall)... Applying taxes via tolls to visiting folks like this is just going to encourage them never to come and not address any real issue in the slightest. Or even more likely make drivers more pissed off resulting in an increase in the unpleasantness of commuting anywhere...

One thing I just didn't get when I visit the states... Yes you pay less taxes.. but you have toll bridges and whatnot everywhere... I just can't think of it as anything other than a tax.. except less efficient because its collection requires the building and employment of toll gates...
