This is the sad state of the left in America

When I hear about things like this, it really pisses me off.

It really shows where the left stands, against America. This doesn't constitute protest or political speech; it reflects madness. America-haters have come unhinged. When displaying our country's flag makes a dead soldier's family a target for political violence -- and there seems to be little doubt of the nature of this attack -- something terrible has gone wrong with the Left.

Vandals torch 20 U.S. flags, car
Neighbors rally around family that just buried son-in-law soldier

Enquirer staff writer

FAIRFIELD - American flags, lining the lawn of the mother- and father-in-law of fallen U.S. Army Pfc. Timothy Hines Jr., were heaped in a pile early Saturday and burned under a car parked in front of the home - less than 24 hours after Hines was buried in Cincinnati's Spring Grove Cemetery.

Jim Wessel, Hines' father-in-law, said he thinks that the fire was a random act of vandalism.

The flames totaled Sara Wessel's car.

Sara is Hines' sister-in-law and Jim Wessel's oldest daughter. She had been staying at the house on Sando Drive since the family returned last week from Washington, D.C., where they were visiting Hines at Walter Reed Army Medical Center.

Hines, 21, was buried Friday after more than 400 people mourned his passing and celebrated his life at the Vineyard Community Church in Springdale. He was buried with full military honors, leaving behind a pregnant widow who expects to give birth in about two weeks and a 2-year-old daughter.

Hines died last week from injuries suffered when a roadside bomb exploded June 19 in Baghdad.

Sara Wessel woke up when the flames set off the car alarm.

"Whoever set the fire used about 20 flags that were given to me by friends," Jim Wessel said. "If it wasn't random vandalism, what statement were they trying to make?"

The 20 flags were replaced with more than 200 by Saturday afternoon. The flags came from family, friends and neighbors.

"We have a great neighborhood," Wessel said.

Police said the fire started about 5:30 a.m.

"What happened to this family is a tragedy; what occurred (Saturday) morning is despicable," Fairfield Police Chief Mike Dickey said in a prepared statement. "We will take every step to identify the persons responsible and hold them accountable."

Doris Morris, who has lived next to the Wessels for 46 years, was shocked to hear about the fire.

"This is a quiet neighborhood, and they are very good, sweet people," Morris said of the Wessels. "It's just horrible that someone would do that, whether it was vandalism or because of the Iraq situation."

Bob Kramer, another neighborhood resident who stopped by the scene to visit with his police officer friends, said he doesn't think that the fire was random. There were more than 20 cars parked on the street Saturday morning, he said.

"With the connection to this family, what are the chances of them randomly getting the flags out of their yard and choosing that car?" Kramer asked. "For someone to target them and add to their suffering is just horrendous."

Anyone with information is asked to call the Fairfield Police Department tip line at 896-8200.

Donations can be made to the Timothy Hines Memorial Fund at any Fifth Third Bank, or to the Hines Family House project through Impact A Hero. Information about that program can be found online at www.impactahero.com.

So, next time there's a murder, I'll attribute it to the Conservatives? Are you guys really all that stupid?

Note, I'm a Liberal, and I proudly disply a rather large flag on my barn throughout the summer and on Veteran's Day. I'm a Veteran as well. Don't make stupid generalizations.

Or maybe something terrible has gone wrong with the Right. This doesn't constitute protest or political speech; it reflects madness. America-haters have come unhinged:

Fred Phelps to Protest Soldier's Funeral
Seatlle Post-Intelligencer (AP) ^ | June 14, 2005 | Hatman

BOISE, Idaho -- A Kansas preacher and gay rights foe whose congregation is protesting military funerals around the country said he's coming to Idaho tomorrow to picket the memorial for an Idaho National Guard soldier killed in Iraq.

A flier on the Web site of Pastor Fred Phelps' Westboro Baptist Church claims God killed Cpl. Carrie French with an improvised explosive device in retaliation against the United States for a bombing at Phelps' church six years ago.

"We're coming," Phelps said yesterday.

Westboro Baptist either has protested or is planning protests of other public funerals of soldiers from Michigan, Alabama, Minnesota, Virginia and Colorado. A protest is planned for July 11 at Dover Air Force Base, the military base where war dead are transported before being sent on to their home states.

Phelps gained national notoriety in 1998 when he picketed the funeral of Matthew Shepard, the gay college student beaten to death in Wyoming.

Since then, Phelps said his church has been the target of hateful words and actions, including a bomb attack six years ago.

Phelps' church has picketed the funerals of AIDS victims for more than a decade.

French, 19, was a Caldwell High School graduate and varsity cheerleader. She was killed June 5 in the northern city of Kirkuk. French served as an ammunition specialist with the 116th Brigade Combat Team's 145th Support Battalion.

Phelps said the fact that French led an all-American life gives him all the more reason to picket her final public tribute.

"An all-American girl from a society of all-American heretics," he said.

"Our attitude toward what's happening with the war is the Lord is punishing this evil nation for abandoning all moral imperatives that are worth a dime," Phelps said.

Caldwell Police Chief Bob Sobba said he cannot bar Phelps from going to the public funeral, which is scheduled for 1 p.m. at the Albertson College of Idaho in that city.

"While we respect Mr. Phelps' right to protest, we would hope that he would respect the family and friends of this young person by not disrupting the memorial," Sobba said.

Idaho Air National Guard Lt. Tony Vincelli, acting as spokesman for French's family, said there were no plans to change the funeral arrangements.

The Rev. Brian Fischer, pastor of Boise's Community Church of the Valley, and himself a past target of protest by the Westboro Baptist Church, decried Phelps' plan.

"What Phelps is doing is a reprehensible thing, to take a funeral and turn it into a photo op for his hate cause," Fischer said.

"We hope everyone will ignore Phelps' group."

In 2003, Phelps demanded that he be allowed to erect an anti-gay monument in a Boise public park. To avoid a lawsuit from his group, city officials voted in 2004 that a Ten Commandments monument be moved out of the park.

because the right is so much better.

why divide the nation between left and right when -- generally speaking -- politicians and fringe groups all suck equally?

More proof of their state.

Crashing a funeral of a Marine to further their political gains.
This borders on sick.

Yes, just as the article I posted above proves how sick the Right wing is.

Now that we've proven that both extremes consist of wingnuts, can we have a productive discussion here where we show respect and don't assume that every person on the Left or Right is a wingnut unless they demonstrate that they are one by doing something like what's described in the articles above?

This is a troll post if I've ever seen one. Please post proof that the vandals were from the "left."

He can't. It was simply a convenient way to dump on people with ideas the OP dislikes.

No unnecessary wars! = hatred for America in his book.

Well I'm somewhat conservative. In this case I agree with arsbanned. While there are liberals that hate America and the freedom that it offers and defends world wide there are radicals from both sides of the middle that hate the Government regardless of which party is in control.

Thus, there are radicals that would prefer to destroy the U.S. for their own motives.

Of course, the first sentence of arses statement makes me think....

Yeah - all those tough-as-nails, leatherneck American heroes who phoned in death threats to the Dixie Chicks come to mind...

That said, the acts depicted in the OP's article are despicible - sounds like something a couple stupid teenagers would do. I'd be perfectly happy to see them do prison time. But to claim this is representative of the Left in general is idiotic and juvenile.

Next time something idiotic is done by a rightie, I'm going to start a thread on it and call all conservatives jerks. And the first con that pisses in my thread will be asked why he didn't post in this punk's thread.
