SA's Zuma to marry third wife
South Africa's President Jacob Zuma is set to marry his third wife.

Senior figures from the ruling ANC, the trade union movement and the South African Communist Party are expected to attend, alongside family and friends.

Mr Zuma, a Zulu, was meant to marry his fiance Thobeka Mabhija, 36, last year but the wedding was postponed due to Mr Zuma's political commitments.

Correspondents say Mr Zuma's belief in the traditional practice of polygamy has split South Africans.

Some support him but many younger people believe it should have no place in a modern society.

Mr Zuma married his first wife Sizakele Khumalo-Zuma, in 1973, and his second wife, Nompumelelo Ntuli-Zuma, two years ago. He is also divorced from Foreign Minister Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma.

"The traditional wedding of President Jacob Zuma and Thobeka Mabhija tomorrow, 4 January, is a private family ceremony," said a statement from the presidency on Sunday.

The office asked journalists to "allow the family the privacy that they are entitled to".

South African media reported that Mr Zuma's home in Nkandla, in the province of Kwa Zulu Natal, was a hive of activity in the run-up to the ceremony.

When Mr Zuma, 66, was inaugurated as president in May, speculation was rife about who would be the first lady.

Mr Zuma has attended some high-profile events with all his wives, including Ms Mabhija.

Mr Zuma paid ilobolo (dowry) to the Mabhija family two years ago.

Earlier this year, the Mabhija family sent gifts to the Zuma family, an indication that all matters regarding the wedding, including a date, had been set, reports say.

This will be Mr Zuma's fifth wedding.

One of his earlier wives, Kate Mantsho-Zuma, died in 2000.

They most likely are better off. Besides, those numbers don't imply that the situation wasn't the same or worse under Apartheid in the black neighborhoods. I doubt the Apartheid government giave a fuck about the wealfare of the blacks, so long as it did not spill over into the white areas.

I stand corrected, sort of. Fact is, SA was a police state for the vast majority of its people. When democracy came about in 1994, I wouldn't doubt that the police were given new instructions on how to act. Most likely, this meant less aggression. Nevertheless, given a choice, I think the blacks prefer the system today than when they were suppressed. Whites, on the other hand, have voted with their feet, by emigrating to England, America, Canada, and other places.

I doubt they are better off now, but many people (perhaps most?) still appreciate freedom. Personally I'd rather be a first class citizen in the hell hole SA has become than a virtual non-entity in Apartheid SA. Dignity has its value, even in hell.

For whites though it's a special little piece of hell. I've a friend who emigrated during Apartheid. A few years ago they emigrated back because the family missed home. He says now it's a war zone, with crime tacitly accepted by the government and security only found by those living in gated communities with armed guards and traveling in armored cars. What was intended to be a return home turned out to be merely an extended visit.

It is interesting that some self-hating westerners still blame colonialism and the British for many of the worse issues in this world. I've heard that in the context of Pakistan-India conflict, I've heard that regarding SA and of course in the context of the Middle Eastern conflict. Somehow, the native population in these places is not expected to assume responsibility over itself.

Other than that, I think some groups are just not ready for democracy. They need a tough dictators, it's just so happens that the white dictators were less corrupt and more progress inclined than the totally corrupt blacks that assumed power in these regions (like Robert Mugabe from Zimbabwe).

If you read about Richard Burtons explorations of Africa it does sound like a real crap hole, and he was pro-african and anti-slavery. You can read about him trying to persuade King Gelele to stop slavery and human sacrifice for example. The place was full of Barbarians before Europeans ever stepped foot into Africa.
