According to an old prophecy, the new pope might be the last, or the last-but-one. In 1139, so the story goes, the celebrated Irish bishop and saint, Malachy of Armagh (1098-1148), made a journey to Rome. While there, he had a vision of all the popes from his day until the end of time: 111 in all. John Paul II was number 110.
The prophecy concludes in apocalyptic tones reminiscent of the Last Judgement:
"In the final persecution of the Holy Roman Church, Roman Peter (i.e., the Pope) will reign, feeding his sheep in the midst of many tribulations. And when these things are accomplished the city of the seven hills will be destroyed, and the Great Judge will judge his people".
Should we be worried?
