<< The judge and jury at the case won't understand it, and the prosector will make it sound like he hacked the site so he could edit it, and they'll all believe it, meaning he'll get screwed. Gah 🙁 >>
Thats dumb. Sometimes hackers pretend they are trying to find security flaws but they find these deliberately through malicious activities. In this case it was so quick and harmless that he should not be held responsible.
Last year my brother's company bought a piece of software which a major website also happened to own. For the hell of it he logged into their site with the default password and it worked. He alerted them immediately and received a t-shirt!
Stuff like this wouldn't happen if people actually understood the technology.
Yup. I have no sympathy for hackers who claim they were just trying to find out security flaws - after already downloading 500 visa numbers or defacing a website. Thats just a horses*it argument and those people should burn. This guy, however, did exactly what I think any one of us would have done. A very minor and simple test & then he quickly alerted the people who own the site.
Ok...being from Oklahoma and having distant relatives from the Poteau area let me just say this. That area of the state has more in common with rural Arkansas than it does with anywhere in Oklahoma. The people down there are a bunch of backward thinking hicks that are still somewhat amazed by indoor plumbing and electricity. If this goes to trial in that area he WILL be convicted by a jury that probably belongs on Hee-Haw and can't even spell computer. His only hope is that the trial is in Muskogee since that is where it is being proscecuted from. Most likely it will be since that is the nearest federal court to Poteau. This sucks BIG TIME but I'm not really shocked considering the area he is from.
