Yep. The few times I have been guilted into running an AV, it never hit on anything.

Just as with spyware, if you get a virus it's because of USER ERROR.

My machines have never had spyware or a virus.

Oh, don't make me laugh, child. "Acquire better email skills"? Laughable.
Ever heard the saying "prevention is better than cure"? Besides, how do you know that you haven't a trojan lurking somewhere on your machine dormant?

You speak of ignorance, which is amusingly ironic- ignorance must be bliss for you

Really. I'm sorry, you may be an Elite member but saying that receiving a virus is user error is either uninformed or stupid.

I suggest you go and read about the Blaster virus, and read about it's method of attack. No firewall, no antivirus, and one missed Windows Update and you're infected.

No, he doesn't. Viruses are caused by user error and stupidity. One does NOT need an AV to ensure they do not get a virus.

It's the same with spyware.

i see it is impossible to have a conversation with you.

there is no ignorance on this end...i just never have a problem with it, which is what i said initially. if you really want to twist that around again, go for it.

i agree, prevention is better than a cure, but as i said, ive never had a problem, so until i have one, im not installing any of it.

i have everything backed up on an external drive and a server in my house, so if i get a virus on my computer, i can just ghost it in an hour and be back to where i was. that hasnt happened yet, though.

to answer your question, i know i havent had a problem yet because i installed norton anti-virus before i formatted. i was curious to see if it found anything (norton anti-virus 2005) and it came up with 0 results. spybot found 1 item and adaware found nothing. my previous reinstall was 6 months earlier.

edit: some spelling...may have missed some

I was going to post a long, informed and somewhat witty response to this utter garbage, but I can't be bothered. If you think that a lack of antivirus protection will stop you getting a virus, then you're a moron.

Missing an update is user error.

I'm behind a router. If I wasn't I would use a firewall. A firewall is not an AV.

I reissue my challange:

Send me to one website that puts spyware or a virus on my machine without my permission.

To date, no one has been able to do this.

Virus infection and spyware infections are caused by carelessness and user error. Period.

It's not the lack of an AV that stops me from getting a virus. It's having a properly updated machine and knowing what NOT to do to get a virus.

In over a decade of using computers, I have NEVER had a virus or spyware (beyond cookies). NEVER.

Often, I have been made paranoid by people like you and installed AVs. NEVER has any AV program hit on anything on any of my systems.

Absolutely - when they're not acting stupid. I wouldn't call Ribbon13 stupid, I merely disagree with him and his opinion.

My point is this: let's say the Automatic Updates feature flags the MS.Blaster update as ready to install. Let's say you leave your machine on 24/7, and are out of the house for two days or so, and don't get a chance to install it.

Let's say you get infected.

That's my point.

I'd have to say it is user error also. I run only a firewall, both hardware and software, don't run any active AV and don't have any anti-spyware. I'm also just running XP SP1 without any other critical updates.

I manual scan with my AV every once in a while and never have had a single virus. I just recently decided to run two Anti-Spyware programs to check out my system, Spybot, I think, and the new MS one. Nothing found but a few cookies which I allowed anyway. Uninstalled both programs, as I don't like unneccesary programs on my computer.

I'd say that those that can't seem to keep their computer virus-clean without an active AV or Spyware tool should have noob tattooed on their foreheads, not the other way around.

if you hold down Alt while you hit print-screen, it will just copy the active window.

I think I would have to agree with Amused and Bigsmooth - about the AV/spyware/trojan, anyway (no excuse for not having a firewall) ... but I've been having some odd network activity lately...

Of course, having used several AV/AT applications so far, I still haven't found anything:

AVG, F-Secure AV, Kapersky AV, Avast AV, Aadaware SE, Spybot s&d, zero spyware, pest patrol, spysweeper, hijack this, tds-3

Assuming that I do have some sort of malicious code on my computer, it appears unlikely that having had AV software installed prior to said code's arrival would have been very effective.

17 processes, btw .. opera is using 45MB - I have seen it use as much as 120+, but that's because I let it cache as much to RAM as it wants.

i didnt mean to imply that, so if you read it that way, thats not my problem.

How will you know you have a problem? You haven't any antivirus.
i just told you i have never had any sort of virus or spyware, and the one time i checked it found nothing. when i format again at the end of the semester, ill do it again just to ease my curiousity. i dont really care though...they can have my excel spreadsheets with my grades and my pictures of hot women if they want it. everything else i have is encrypted or on my external drive at all times (which is not connected longer than a minute or two at the most)
i have everything backed up on an external drive and a server in my house, so if i get a virus on my computer, i can just ghost it in an hour and be back to where i was. that hasnt happened yet, though.

yes, without the loss of any data. my documents and all of my saved files (like quicken and outlook) are backed up daily.

maybe so, but ill continue to use that luck until it fails me. when it does, ill let you give me an "i told you so" but it hasnt happened yet.

I'll agree 100% with the spyware infections. Virus infections, however, are slightly different, as I'm sure you're aware. Referring back to the Blaster incident- let's assume someone like BigSm00th isn't running a router, and of course, isn't running any antivirus. If he misses the update for Blaster, then he's likely to get infected.

However, let's also assume that a virus is created that exploits a weakness in Windows that hasn't been patched yet. What are you going to do?

You're going to catch it, because there are no virus def's yet?

Edit: Like bigsmooth, I've run an AV every year or two just for S&G, and with the exception of my current problem which has yet to be positively identified as local code [as opposed to flaky firewall software - or user error ;) ] - and doesn't seem to be detected by AV software anyway - I have yet to acquire a virus in almost 10 years of online computing. (and I was a big binaries hog in those early years ;) )
