Savvy business decision? BeautifulPeople.com expels 5,000 people for gaining weight over holidays

It’s not easy staying slim and beautiful over the holidays.

About 5,000 members of a popular dating site found that out the hard way, when they were booted from BeautifulPeople.com - the site is a dating and networking site for attractive individuals that has a "ban on ugly people" - for putting on a few pounds over the holidays.

"As a business, we mourn the loss of any member, but the fact remains that our members demand the high standard of beauty be upheld. Letting fatties roam the site is a direct threat to our business model and the very concept for which BeautifulPeople.com was founded," Robert Hintze, founder of BeautifulPeople.com, said in a statement.

So how did these "fatties" get flagged? Other members, angry that the now-plumper members were still on the site, demanded action from the company.

"We responded to complaints by moving the newly chubby members back to the rating stage. This is the same as having them re-apply," Greg Hodge, managing director of BeautifulPeople.com, said in a statement.

The company sent an email telling the members that they would need to reapply when they had lost the holiday chunk.

"Their re-applications were reviewed by existing members and only a few hundred were voted back in. Over 5,000 were rejected," Hodge added.

The United States had the most members who got the boot (1,520), followed by the U.K. (832) and Canada (533).

"The USA has been grossly over-indulging since Thanksgiving - it's no wonder that so many members have been expelled from the network. We hope they will be back after shedding the festive pounds," Hodge said.

Best and most honest person there is...fatties simply are not welcome. I like the use of the word "roam", like they are grazing buffalo infesting the site.

how did they find out the people are fatties? does it require a new pic every week, or a bathroom scale shot?

I'd be willing to bet that 90% of the pictures on that site feature someone wearing Ed Hardy clothing.

There's plenty of dating sites out there. I don't see a problem with a dating site designed to exclusively appeal to those with aesthetic priorities enforcing their membership requirements. If J-Date kicked out a bunch of Mormons I'd be about as shocked.

Just guessing here, but since it's a site based on physical attractiveness, the administrators probably encourage their users to report anyone that shows up for a date and looks substantially different from their profile photos.

There is probably no weight limit or standard, but it sounds like you have to be rated at a certain level of "attractiveness" before you are permitted to browse and contact other users.

While I have no problem with the existence and concept of the site, anyone taking perverse pleasure in seeing people struggle with their weight is worth less than 3/5 of a human.

They signed up their own pompous "beautiful" asses onto a site that is full of other self-absorbed pretty boys/girls, so what's the problem?

I think the rest of the internet should follow suit, kick the fatties off the interwebs! they're clogging all the pipes and making it run slow!!

seriously though, I lol'd good for them.

If you're looking for love strictly based on looks... well that's probably why you're still looking for love... I once saw this quote in someone's sig:

"behind every beautiful woman stands a man who is sick of her sh|t"

BTW my wife IS gorgeous, but I married her for her personality 😉

I don't see the problem. It's not like they're sugar coating it or anything. Beautiful people as judged by popular vote only. People love to be accepted into little elite societies like that BECAUSE they know that other people are excluded. How the hell can they complain if they no longer meet the very criteria that attracted them to the site in the first place?

😀

Some people are damaged like me, and don't laugh at much humour that isn't sarcastic / ironic / slightly mean. I mean, one would chuckle once or twice at Mr Bean, while the Blackadder is a constant source of amusement.

Anyway, as for that site, I'm in two minds. The first exclaims 'I hope those elitist bastards step on an echidna' while the other says, in a neutral tone, that that page is as logical as a community site for goths, or a picture site with photos of half naked black women. Still, it adds after some consideration, 'beauty' is seen as good by all, whereas 'goth' is seen as good by only some. Make twin pages for dictators and the filthy rich, why don't you?
