It has been awhile since I have been in the General Hardware section. Probably close to 9 months.

Back then I remember the X2 was all the rage. Every other post was "X2 3800+ build advice"
or something like that. Now I come back and it is Conroe builds.

How things change. This post may seem pointless and it probably is, I just find it kind of funny because back then no one was touching Intel.

Its actually a very good thing. You have at least two companies agressively competing in the marketplace---with the selling points being price and performance. While at the same time various software pushes the limits of existing CPU's. It shows the free enterprise system works well here.

Unlike something like ink jet printers or cell phones---where they sell bell and whistles, don't compete on costs, and the industry as a whole colludes with each other to rip off the consumer.
 
OP, i think the same as you do. First it was X2's then opty's now conroe. Always changes. Hell i remember the days when people would stil reccommend the 2500+ XP-M, although most of the reccommendations were for a "new" at the time A64.
