And just to make you cry, sometimes jobs that are advertised aren't for real. Bogus job requirements as an excuse for outsourcing aside, state employees have to re-interview to be reclassified [and make more money] above a certain level. That means the job will be advertised as open, but unless you're much better than the person who is already doing it, there's not much of a chance.)

Damn, read about that outsourcing part.

That's nothing new. Many companies are required to post all job openings externally, even if they fully intend to transfer somebody internally. Certainly true @ my company. Also not that uncommon to list non-existant jobs just to "guage the market" in a partiucular skill set.

This is why you don't apply for jobs in the newspaper. Instead, put your resume together and send it off to some headhunters.

Duke university is particularly nasty about that. I applied to a marine research position that asked for NC local with divemaster experience and diesel mechanics skills. I have those, even certified in as a diesel mechanic. I emailed resume, emailed again a week later to see if they had received my resume. No replies at all.

I forgot about it and then 10 months later at one of the local bars, I'm introduced to the professor who posted the ad. She said my name sounded familiar and i told her that i was the one who sent a resume but go no response. She said that oh, they already had someone for the job. She said she didn't feel that they had to tell applicants that they already had someone for the job. I told her then she'll understand. And I grabbed my coat and walked out the door without saying anything else. My friend told me she was put out by my antics until he reminded her she did the same thing to me first.

But I've heard from others that most, if not all, university job postings to the outside are already filled or have someone in mind. EOE my ass! :|
