So I'm tired of getting crappy asian cooking ingredients from the local super and I found a well reviewed asian market and checked it out this evening. Bought just a few things.

Pearl River Bridge Superior light soy
PRB Superior dark soy
"Flying horse on earth brand" Phu quoc fish sauce
"Gold Plum" Chinkiang vinegar

Pretty much staple stuff, but then I bought "Yang Jiang Preserved Black Beans with Ginger".Those are completely evil. I took a couple to sample and now I want to go back and snack on them. That's just wrong.

I like Pearl River Bridge soy sauce. Much better than some of the more well known commercialized brands like Lee Kum Kee or Kikkoman.

The black beans are great depending on how you use them. Mash them up for use in sauces or stir-fry.

Also try some of the Lao Gan Ma chili sauce. They're great. Does contain peanuts for those allergic to nuts.

Thanks, I'll definitely try that. "Angry Lady Sauce" eh? Wonder how that got its name.

I'm going to make this tomorrow- "goop"

I am using a bottle of Y&Y Light Soy Sauce and its actually quite nice. Better than Kikkoman.

I think it's old mother in law or something like that. Or is it god mother? I have no clue.

Trader Joe's discontinued their tetra-packed silken tofu in September. Our local store just ran out. It's back to planning ahead and shopping for perishable tofu from the asian market that's on the traffic-filled-route home.

I use this stuff. Love it

My local Asian store stocks these ingrediants and much more. I usually replenish my supplies every 6 months as it takes me that long to use them up. You have to be careful when using these things as they are so high in sodium that you can easily double or triple your recommended intkae in one meal.

If I didn't use this stuff up it would probably last for 5-10 years. No microbes could survive in that high salt environment.

..
better than kikkoman?!? you are dreaming.

less expensive, sure, and certainly the best chinese-style soy sauce, but not comparable with the n1 japanese soy sauce.
(i use pearl river myself - both the gold and the silver label)
i dont buy kikkoman because i always wind up drinking it straight, out of the bottle.

Yes, better. Kikkoman is not bad but it's a secondary choice for me.

Wtf? You drink soy sauce? What kind of crazy are you?

I love that sauce. They're the best. The spice is just right... I have 2-3 jars of it at all times.

I've used that sauce (after plucking out the peanuts, I'm allergic) and there was little to no flavor or spice. I've used it 3-4 times and it was the same result each time. 🙁 Maybe I got a bad bottle but I'm not inclined to try it again.

You have a very strange peanut allergy.

A lot of these spices have a taste of home. The spicy ones don't remind me of my home, but I'm sure there are others that grew up with it.

I use their black bean sauce a lot, I have that one too, my wife uses it, but I never tried it for some reason. The nutritional info label is a hoot. Serving size of like 1 cup or something...

It is a strange allergy. I can't eat the protein. If I do, I lose my sense of taste for about an hour. Nothing else really happens and I haven't ventured to try eating it anymore than the occasional piece from some Vietnamese food (I scrape off the chopped peanuts if they end up in my banh mi, bun thit, etc). My fiance makes me carry an epi-pen since she loves peanut butter. Peanut oil is fine though.

That's what we use now In my house when another brand changed its formula. Also probably the most used one at the Asian market here in NoVA.
