This story is sad, but what kind of dumbass parents does she have that they let her loose on the internet with a webcam and no training or filtering? And why does she act like she craves attention and then gets wigged out when she gets attention?

Yes the behavior against her was criminal, but it could have all been avoided had her parents taught her some common sense.

Well I think all of this comes from a lack of parenting on her parents part. Unfortunately that is all too common, especially in a bad economy where people have to work more and spend less time with their kids. While I place a lot of blame on her parents there is other blame to go around for sure. Everyone blaming her and feeling no remorse for her needs to take a step back and remember what they were like at 13 years old, and then imagine your parents weren't around and like most 13 year olds who crave attention from the opposite sex.

I'll be honest I don't have much sympathy, I really don't. Its getting nauseating for kids to just go around blaming other kids for everything. This person voluntarily cut them ownselves, they had a clear mental defect and that has nothing to do with other people. This kid's parents clearly didn't pay much attention.

But throw in all the parents who know nothing about computers into the mix. Most of us here did stupid stuff like this and are lucky to be alive or not have it thrown back in our face since we were not born in the digital age. All teenagers make stupid decisions they regret, the difference is now it is permanent record and back then it was not (most of the time).

Being a new father with a 4 month old daughter...this just makes me sad. I think i'd go on a rampage if I ever found out my daughter was getting bullied.

That's the thing. Why did she not tell her parents?

One thing I hope to instill in my two kids is that they can and should bring any issue to my attention, no matter how bad. I can only imagine that the parents of the poor girl that is the subject of this story could have intervened and helped her, had they only known what was going on.

Have you not watched any movies with teenage characters? They think the world does not understand anything they are going through. In this case the parents did intervene, they knew when the cops showed up, she moved to her moms, she was on drugs and seeing a counselor, they stopped one suicide attempt with bleach. I am sure the parents could have done more but they maybe like you and I. Sometimes the only way to stop a child from making mistakes is to lock them in a dungeon, but last i checked that was illegal. But again we do not know what level the parents were involved with trying to help their daughter.

meh, being bullied is part of growing up, whether you are on the giving or receiving end. i don't remember people killing themselves when i was growing up.

granted, it's different in todays society with all of the social media and connectivity, so i can't really compare i guess.

while it's sad i can't say that it bothers me at all.

is boomer your dad?

LOL.

you don't feel bad for a 7th grader that killed herself due to people bullying her?

wow.

this is important to note, not everyone grew up with computers,in my expirence if you are over 40, you dont know shit about computers and the internet beyond facebook and email unless you happen to work in the tec industry

she was 16
so born ~1996
assume her parents were 25, they might not have even used a compter at that point, they were still stupidily expensive and the majority of people didnt have one or the internet

Idea: Equip your children with cell phones that record straight to the internet. (cannot destroy evidence) Get them to record their bullies, and then demand justice.

Sigh...now this thread landed on AT.

First, getting picked on by a bully as a kid is not 'bullying' like it means today. These are more or less 100's of kids jumping on a bandwagon and tormenting someone.

Sure, turn off Facebook...doesn't stop the kids talking amongst themselves nor putting pictures of it up.

Sure, move away....this kid did.

Oh oh, don't date guy's that have a g/f already...seriously? this is really part of high school. You move on when you find a new girl...it's the way it goes.

It's her fault she sent nude shots and she should have just called the police...well hate to break it to the parents but this is really popular with kids today. Tits get sent. Sad, thing is each one of these kids sending the pics if caught will be charged with child porn and placed on the sexual predator log. Fortunately I believe almost anywhere at 18 that is dropped.

What's fucked up is so many people are saying it was totally her fault.

I have heard a few more details about this story that this girl wasnt as innocent as she was letting on.

For starters, she didn't simply "flash" anybody on her webcam..which she said sparked the bullying.

She actually was known for masturbating, flashing, and just being inappropriate via her webcam for any guy that would give her an audience. She also slept with quite a few guys from her school(s) which made her generally unliked.

That incident where she claims a bunch of girls came to her school and beat her up was because she slept with somebody's boyfriend...but also because of the reputation she had already.

There were tons of her pictures posted on a site that shall not be named that has been removed so far.

I feel bad that Amanda had to kill herself, but there are other cases of children either dying or taking their lives that get much more sympathy from me.

I can't feel sorry for someone that purposefully destroyed themselves.

My mother always told me that as a woman, two of the most precious things I have is my self-respect and my dignity. When I give that up, nobody else (male or female) will respect me either.

truth hurts

Great post.

Adolescence is a hell of a time, a lot of people make a lot of mistakes during that time. To make a series of mistakes is bad enough, to have your face publicly shoved in them is nigh unbearable.

and this is why ALL social media is banned in my house. opendns.com and windows7 with parental controls turned on is a parents best friend.

This doesn't solve the problem...just makes it take a little longer until you find out.

Parental controls and banning something like Facebook which is pretty much a part of high school is not the answer concerning teenagers.

I hope anyone that believe this chick got what she deserves comes and finds me in a bar one day and tells me that.

not many parents can afford Iphone 5 with data plan; and don't you thing the bullies just grab the phone from the victim and destroy it?

Who said she deserved it?

I said it was her parents' fault for being irresponsible, and it is. Don't let your 13-year-old daughter play with a webcam unsupervised.

How do you stop this when any phone she will encounter plus have the devices around an average neighborhood will have one?!?

Also this is assuming this happens face to face...it's all guerrella warfare on the internet usually or sneaking around posting up pictures.

13-year-old daughters don't need iphones, or even phones with cameras.

Also, there's this little thing called "parenting"...it involves instilling a certain amount of responsibility and common sense and morality within your children.

Any parent whose daughter thought it was a good idea to get topless on a webcam in front of a complete stranger is a failure as a parent.
