On second though, why the hell wasn't Google the one to think of this, develop it, and implement it as an addition to Picasa or Google Images or Google maps or Google Earth? Imagine, click on a city in Google Earth and have the entire city available to you in high resolution images.

Why not, Google?!

I really don't see a point in it, what are the applications? Traveling? yes. Art? yes. Real Estate? yes. But that's all I could think of.

and who will "supply" the gazillions of pictures on the desired topic?
let's say, if i want to check out the Great Wall of China or the exhibits in Louvre Museum, I will need a bunch of users upload their share of people on the same topic.

also, what if I want to look up something more obscure?

I guess it's source data is ordinary photos that people put on the web. I suppose this will be just another way to see the world. Travel and real estate companies would be naturals for advertising on this thing while it is being used.

then the quality of the picture submitted will vary greatly by the users...

on one pic one guy will have a 4800x3200, and the on the zoom up pic, the other guy will have a crappy 800x600 taken from his RAZR.

I don't see the practical applications, but still... that's pretty damn cool.

There are certain places that I have a special emotional attachment to, if I could compile pictures to make a virtual space of those places... that would be primo. But I couldn't see paying the undoubtedly high price for such software.

The porn industry will. They will find a way to build replicants using this.

Of what, celebrities? I don't think the program works that way. I didn't see any actual 3D movement.

D'oh, after trying it, they are clearly using their own photos.

mb,

That's the first thing I thought of too when I saw this product from MICRO$OFT. I mean, it's St. Mark's Square, which originated in the 9th century. Nobody has ever taken a picture of one of the most famous places in the world, except you. And like the devil scum they are, they robbed you of your original pictures and put it into a 3D photo program!

In the future, instead of picture slide shows on TV, we'll be walking people through virtual reality tours of our own vacations. :p

Cool stuff, but can't say it interests me in particular.

Actually, I thought it would be cool if they really used random images they found online for this project instead of taking their own pictures specifically for the use in the demo. It would really show the versatility of the program if they did use random images. I would be honored if they thought my cheap digicam pics were good enough to show off their new technology :)

How will photos be linked together? Would people have to link their photos manually? If so, what's to prevent someone from putting some porn in the niagra falls?

Lame, the concept is flawed and execution is really far fetched, and even if delivered it will be in some locked up form where people would have to pay through the nose to take advantage of, no thank you, I'll be looking at something else for my inspiration.
