I think you are in the right forum.

You'd just have to add a Tuner card to your PC and the appropriate software and you'll be good.

I'd recommend you find the software that suits your needs and then a card that is supported.

Your budget would probably dictate the best solution.

I would like to stay around 50 to 60 bucks...but whats typically the range for these cards?

also, my needs are pretty basic...I want to be able to watch TV here and there and record some sports games and edit out the commercials, could you recommend something for that? Is there anything that automatically edits out commercials?

For $50 to $60, you are looking at a software card like the popular leadtek cards, and I've seen Lifeview cards recommended here. You could almost swing a hardware card, but would likely have to rely on freeware software, and maybe even refurbished or used hardware.

You might get away with the software shipped with the software cards, MythTV in Linux or a number of Windows based programs. For hardware cards, GB-PVR or similar for the freeware route, and SageTV or BeyondTV come to mind (BTV also supports some software based cards IIRC) MCE 2005 for an OS/PVR frontend combo.

Is there anything that automatically edits out commercials?

I use DVR-MSToolbox which does a great job with logo'd MCE recordings, so I'm sure there is something for the non-MCE community based on similar tech.

I did some research on tuner cards, and everywhere i went most people said to try a card that could use beyond tv. that program is quite nice but it does require buying.

There is a sapphire card based on the ati 550 theatrix chipset for sale right now bundled with beyond tv. I saw it for 100 canadian this week. Not sure what it would go for in the states, but but if you could swing that you would be set with a good hardware card and good program.
