This is how you get an OS update on a Samsung phone.

Saw that yesterday, if that's out before I get 2.2 I'm going to be furious. Samsung has already lost two customers, my and my wife's Fascinates are the last of their products we'll ever buy. They've been downright shady when it comes to supporting their Galaxy S phones, especially with T Mobile.

It's not just an OS update; the phone also appears to support Verizon's new 4G LTE. Notice how it says "HSPA+ 14.4Mbps" while the others say "HSDPA 7.2/ HSUPA 5.76."

Perhaps they needed to use gingerbread to achieve those speeds.

Seriously, just get over it already. They aren't releasing the update because they're working on it. Creating 798798746546546547987 threads to bitch about it isn't going to make them complete it any faster. 2.2 is out for the Mesmerize; it's highly likely that the Fascinate will receive it soon. They probably just have to work out the kinks with the stupid apps that Verizon ships with their android phones.

I could be wrong here, but those are GSM channels. I'm pretty sure ATT uses the HSPA+ 14.4 network. The page linked says nothing about LTE.

You are correct; the phone isn't even CDMA

It does appear to be using 4G though as data rates are double the old phones.

Therein lies the problem. Its more than a year late. The GS phones are getting Froyo while everyone else is gearing up for Gingerbread builds. In all likelihood, they'll also get Ice Cream Sandwich before the GS phones get GB too. :p Course, but then Samsung will just shrug and tell their users that they're at the end of their contract and should upgrade anyway. :p

AFAIK, you do not need GB to hit the HSPA+ speeds. All TMO's 4G phones use Froyo.

I didn't say it was about an OS update, I know it's an entirely new phone, I'm saying that if that is released before I get 2.2 I'll be furious.

And I know they're "working on it" but when you spread rumor out in August that 2.2 will be out for your upcoming phone in September to boost sales and have you consumers waiting for it in April, you're not working hard enough.

Bateluer doesn't own a galaxy s but complains about it not getting updates more then anyone who does.
Waiting for OTA's? On an android device? Why?
This. I've had 2.2.1 on my fascinate for months now. Anyone who actually cares about updates likely has the ability to install it themselves.

It pains me too see people support a company by buying their products when they are clearly substandard.

You shouldn't support HTC then. Sure they may update their phones faster but that doesn't make up for their pathetic batteries, awful gpu's and mediocre to horrible screens. Plus they are still releasing phones that are little more than a respin of the HD2, a phone that launched in 2009.

Also for all the hate Touchwiz received Samsung did add value to their phones with it, the Galaxy S Phones have a substantially improved media player with the best out of the box format support of any Android phone. The Galaxy S also had gpu accelerated web browsing on Android 2.1, which as far as I know still make them unique

This post is a bunch of bullshit.

First of all, people on this forum, with Android devices, shouldn't be waiting on OTA's.

Secondly, let's look @ Adereno 205 vs. SGX540

http://androidandme.com/2010/10/news/3dmarkmobile-gpu-showdown-adreno-205-vs-powervr-sgx540/

Awful GPU eh?

Battery life will depend on the ROM/Kernel you're using. I routinely get 24 hours + out of my G2 on CM7, oc'd to 1.4, with screen off profiles.

Galaxy S is the clear leader in it's display. That's it.

Touchwiz is by no means an advantage. I'd take Sense over TW, even though I prefer AOSP ROM's. Touting features of Galaxy S 2.1 is also irrelevant at this point.

Indeed, which is why I warn people off of HTC.

What's wrong with HTC? I'd maintain that they are probably the most desirable Android phone manufacturer. They make extremely well built phones, Sense is extremely good and really gives Android the jump in UI finesse that it really needs, and they support their products as well or better than everybody else.

I was mainly thinking of the Adreno 200 vs SGX 530 in regards to gpu but even the 205 is just acceptable.

HTC shipped the Thunderbolt with a 1400 mAh battery despite having a power hungry LTE radio, hardly an ideal combination. Even with the smaller battery it's still 13mm thick vs 10mm for a Galaxy S with a 1500mAh battery.

Personally I'd tale Touchwiz plus the ability to play flac over Sense any day. And the Galaxy S's stock browser performance is relevant because Samsung actually took the initiative ti fix something that many people believed was wrong with Android.

I just really don't see what HTC offers that's compelling other than updates, they seem to be a step behind on SoC's and can't offer displays that match what Samsung, Apple, and soon Lg are shipping.

You should take a look at those numbers again.

Still just acceptable?

So you'll take a slow/bloated UI over Sense...to play back .flac files? Who the hell is transferring lossless audio to a phone?

2.1 is old news. No one cares about browser performance in 2.1, because well...2.1 is old.

It's great you bought a SGS handset. That doesn't mean you need to spew bullshit here to defend your purchase.

Yup, still just acceptable. And since all my music is already stored as flac flies I don't have to convert it to another format any time I want to listen to it on my phone.

Funny, a good number of reviewers considered Touchwiz smoother than Sense.

Yes, I bought a Galaxy s phone and when it comes time to update I'll be buying a Galaxy S2. Samsung may not be perfect and I would certainly like faster updates but until someone else starts shipping phones with top notch displays and the latest SoC's I'll be sticking with them.

Yeah, if you're carrying around FLAC audio I hope you also have a pocket amp/DAC for your earbuds/headphones, because the vast majority of phones have really bad D/A conversion for the headphone port. I've never heard a phone where I can tell the difference between lossless audio (uncompressed WAV from the CD) and OGG, AAC, or high-bitrate MP3.

Samsung's OLED screens are way ahead of everyone else (I assume they'll have qHD screens before too long, too) but that's the only reason I'd get a Samsung device.

So he links some benchies showing the Adreno 205 beating the SGX 540 more often than not and you show some that show the opposite. Both GPUs are very clearly in the same category of performance, this can not be denied. You can't decide to ignore benchmarks that show results that you do not like, that's not science. So if the Adreno 205 is "just" acceptable, then the SGX 540 is nothing more than "just" acceptable as well. For you to say anything else is pure fanboyism.

Go into a Verizon store and play with a Thunderbolt and play with a Fascinate and tell me that Touchwiz is smoother. Next you'll be saying Motoblur is smoother than iOS right? Can't let liking a platform cause you to make posts that disagree with verifiable facts; it's a mistake a lot of people make.

Whats funny is that the Galaxy S has pretty bad-ass sound quality and Headphone Amplifier.

Adreno 205 is fine for me, well beyond acceptable, given that I play no games that stress the GPU at all. I'm not sitting down on my phone to rock out on Q3. I have a nice desktop for FPS gaming.

I'll venture to guess that you're in the extreme minority when it comes to .flac. Glad that support is there for you out of the box. I'd estimate that 99% of users don't even know it's there.

I'm not going to trade blows over a UI overlay. In my opinion, they're both inferior to vanilla ROMs.

All hail Samsung! Best phone manufacturer EVAR! Is that what you need to hear from people? I jump on HTC handsets, because the dev community is generally large and very active on their devices.

See any Gingerbread ROMs here? (I saw one Alpha build)

http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=721

How about here? (CM7, Gingerbread Sense, etc.)

At this point, yes the SGX540 is nothing to write home about unless it's the overclocked version used by OMAP 4. I bought my Captivate right after it's launch last July and at the time the SGX540 was by far the fastest gpu available. The first US market phone to get the Adreno 205 wasn't released until several months later.

The Fascinate isn't a far comparison, it's a crippled version of the SGS with less ram and is also substantially older than the Thunderbolt.

As far as Motoblur you won't find me defending it, IMO it's the worst android skin by far.

I'm hardly trying to say that Samsung is perfect, they really need to work on faster updates. However HTC has plenty of flaws of their own you just don't see people making a new thread every time they screw something up.
