During times when the price of gas gets really high I've had people come up to me at stations with a small gas can and ask for some gas while I'm filling up my car. They don't seem like scammers, but I still don't give them anything.

During college the big scam was "students" coming on campus and gaining access to the dorms to sell magazine subscriptions saying that the funds were going towards their college education - but really these guys and girls were using the profits to go down to Cancun and party on Spring break. I got lured in and trapped by one of the good-looking girls doing this, all the while she's asking me what my interests are and circling magazine subs that I might like given my interests. Luckily, after about ten minutes of talking to her, I figured out what was going on and got the hell out of there.

This is what I never understood about this scam. Even if I fell for it they'd just end up with a couple gallons of gas to lug around. Then they'd be lugging around a full can of gas asking everyone for money for gas.

maybe they're trying to get free gas? Or maybe they are like the homeless who ask for money for food but if you offer food they refuse because they just wanted the money.

Naw, they don't want the gas for the same reason they don't want the food. Its really hard to trade gas directly for booze or drugs.

I would of said for him to open up that gas so I can put a gallons worth in there since I'm already pumping gas anyway.

Had this happen to me last month. The guy with the gas can came over to me asking for $5 for gas. I said sure, where is your car? He pointed to a car partially parked in the lot. I told him: I'll tell you what. I'll buy that bright new gas can for $5 and then help you push your car to the pump to get gas. He stood there with that deer in the headlight look and then just turn away and got into his car and drove off. Hmmmm.... I guess he wasn't really out of gas. Imagine that!

I left work last night with my fuel light on (on the motorcycle). I rode straight to the gas station to fill it up but it left me thinking what I would have done if the power was out and I couldn't get gas. Wondering if someone would be kind enough or even able to help me because I doubt I could have made it home on my reserve.

id have helped if you asked, had your bike at the pump and were willing to accept GAS instead of CASH for gas. one time i actually let one of those guys that ask for a tow, my car is just around the corner... usually its a bad idea to give them a ride, they are going to jack or roll you. the guy got in, i put my pistol on my lap and asked him where his car was parked. he didnt even wait for the brakes to go on before jetting out the door.

ive only given cash to one of the gas can crew one time. i told him what i tell them all, entertain me. he had a great story, even offered to sing a song. i gave him 2 bucks. most of them just say "i need the gas. gimme a cupple bux"

I'm pretty sure if I was legitimately looking for help and I got in the car with someone and he pulled out a gun, I'd run too.
