The point is the adjustment gradients are 1/16 and 1mm, and because of this lack of full linear adjustment you need different wrenches to fit each system.

That's a pretty crappy wrench then. Most crescent wrenches are adjusted using a threaded wheel thingy. It doesn't have clearly defined notches; it's completely analog.

The whole point of an adjustable wrench is that it makes it irrelevant whether you're working on SAE or metric nuts....the wrench simply opens and closes to match the size needed.

To sell a set as metric and a set as SAE is just money grubbing and preying upon people's ignorance.

And if you're not sure of the size of the nut you're working on and using an adjustable wrench, does the scale really do anything for you? You don't know the size........

And if you say, "Well, once it fits, then you can look at the scale and then pick out the proper size socket....", that's just stupid. Anyone who works at all with nuts and sockets begins to be able to determine, within a size or two, what socket size you need. Try it, if it doesn't fit, move to the next size, up or down, necessary. Repeat as needed. Takes all of a few seconds.

And there's the flaw in your argument. Within a size or two. If I'm under the car with the adjustable and it's not cutting the mustard and I realize I need a socket, I don't want to climb back out, pull three different sockets, take them all back under there and try them till I've got the right size. I can just look at the scale on the adjustable and get the right socket. Seems like a time saver to me. Will also let you nail down whether you've got a metric or SAE nut. As others have said, car manufacturers love to mix things up.

I'm not saying these things are worth the $90 they're charging for them. But given the choice between an adjustable without scales and one with for the same scratch, I'll take the one with the scales. I use mine regularly and I have seen the value of it.

I do however think this particular set is stupid for having only one scale on the wrench. They're obviously trying to sell more wrenches by making two different sets, one metric and one SAE.
