You always have to wonder who the hell came up with this kind of idea and who his idiot friends/family were that thought, "That's an awesome idea, let's go!!".

Perhaps some Indian was pulling a Michael Jackson one day and accidentally dropped the baby over the side when a couple of people were walking by the base with a mattress that happened to save the baby. I don't think they're idiots. It's a strange custom... sure, but it doesn't look like the babies are harmed. There's tons of people around and it's not like they're landing on cement.

It's no worse than parents that seem hell bent on tossing their babies into a pool of water to learn to swim on their own.

Thank you; and as long as the babies aren't harmed.

But let's face it, if there were any serious harm being done to the babies then this practice would have died out LONG ago along with the people that did it.

In addition, the drive to be protective of one's children is uber strong (as Julius demonstrates) that this tradition HAS to have some thing beneficial for that drive to side stepped and put the child in what an outsider would perceive to be life threatening.
