A suburban Milwaukee teenager and his dad are suing the boy's math teacher for assigning homework to be done over summer vacation.
Peer Larson, 17, who attends Whitnall High School, and his father, Bruce Larson, say teachers have no legal authority to make students do schoolwork over summer vacation because the state-mandated, 180-day school year is over.
The 17-year-old says the teacher gave him and his classmates a series of three complicated math assignments. Peer said having a job and high school homework in the summer is just wrong.
"I had no energy at the end of the day to actually do it during my week. I only had one day off each week when I actually came home, and I could not do it then because I was catching up on sleep or just enjoying myself because that's what I should be able to do during the summer," Peer Larson said.
Bruce Larson says it's poor public policy, because students are still children and need a break from increased pressure during the summer months.
The Larsons contacted 16 law firms about the case. Two responded, but were not interested. The father and son have to represent themselves.
The lawsuit filed in Milwaukee County Circuit Court also names the math department chairwoman, principal, school district and state superintendent.
Whitnall High School officials were not available for comment Thursday.
