I open the door and start walking to my car at 5:30 this morning (still pretty dark and I'm tired) and I notice what appears to be a HUGE bug crawling across my driveway (I'm already freaked out if its a bug that big). I grab my flashlight and digicam and take a closer look. It's a big ass hermit crab (obviously store bought with the soccerball shell), I took a few pics and let it's keep going. Hopefully it survives, but I wasn't going to keep it.
 
shoulda scooped it up and looked for a reward posting. Someone had to have lost that thing...

I already thought I might be hallucinating so I wasn't going to touch it. I took pics to look at later in the day to make sure it was real. 🙂
 
why do people insist on painting things on crustations shells like that?
i saw some in the pet store with things painted on the back
 
I initially thought it was some mutant supersized big ass potato bug or roly-poly beetle that balls up then frightened. from a distance in the dark I couldn't tell it was a shell, just a walking creature that became a ball shape when it heard me open the door.

Same reason people shave poodles the way they do, make animals wear clothes, etc. People like to anthropomorphize things, and so they do.
 
You could've taken it to a pet store. Lots of pet stores sell them, and I'm sure they wouldn't have minded taking it off of your hands.

Hermit crabs are social animals. This one is probably not going to make it on its own. 🙁

What do hermit crabs eat?
They eat any and everything. They are scavengers and nothing will harm them. They love sweets but vegetables are best. A good diet is dried cereal and calcium substitute in the form of powder mixed with their food or sea fan. Crushed up egg shells works and so does a calcium base bath from coral chips. Sometimes they munch on wood especially choya wood. Yes, they eat all sweets especially love chocolate chip cookies, hamburgers, pizza, peanut butter, fruits and popcorn

Slightly out of his habitat as well. I give it less than 5% chance of making it a week unless someone takes him in.
 
Aww 🙁 Poor guy - I have two hermit crabs - I need to get them a nice aquarium - they're funny creatures (well until one latcheds onto your finger!) 😛
