Or a quieter "exhaust fan"? :Q I'd get clobbered if my wife was a member here and read that. :D

"I feel depressed now that my system upgrade is done."

They're never done! Spend some $$ on some software to push your rig. Something other than benchmark programs.

It's like building a hot car only for the dyno and not the streets. ;)

I use UT2003 and Elderscrolls: Morrowind to push my system, but a new game would be fun. mechBgon has me interested in fighting robots all the sudden.

Hmm...you play Morrowind, yet you say your computer is complete? Just turn on/up AA/AF options on the GF4, and you'll soon realize that you are just beginning. :)

It is playable, very playable, at 1024x768x32 with Blend selected in the DirectX portion of the GF4 control panel. It might not be Radeon 9700 Pro pretty but it is still decent. And if you read my entire thread you'll see that I want to upgrade my video card still. :) But it's not fun to do that.

1. Uninstall old card. Remove all traces of old drivers and reg. entries.
2. Install new card.
3. Install new drivers.
4. Tweak.
5. Enjoy.

No fun there. :)

I feel ya bro. I will be putting together the new rig I've been salivating over for the past two months this weekend. I'll probably spend the next couple of weeks gradually tweaking it and then I'm going to be where you are. The great thing is that I purposely left two parts out that I was going to initially order with the rest but decided to space them out specifically because of what you are experiencing.

I have an Nforce2 board but only ordered 1 stick of 512. I will be ordering the second stick in about a month just so I can spend a month without dual ddr and then see if I actually notice a difference in speed.

The second thing I am getting is a TV-Tuner card. I have always wanted one and feel like that will probably provide fun for at least a little while.

As soon as I start to get bored playing with the TV card I suppose it will be time to buy a DVD burner. Oh yes I remember the fun times I spent copying my first CD-RS. I hope the experience is just as cool with a DVD burner.

Good luck to you man, and like someone else said : If you really enjoy the making more than the using then just sell that rig and make sure to at least break even. Then just order new parts. Go with an Intel system this time just for the hell of it. After you build it... sell it. Who says you have to make a profit when you're just doing the stuff you like to do?

Hmmm, I actually would like to build a swift Intel system, try to make it fairly equal to my AMD system. Then I could experiment on them both and see which one was better at what I do with a computer. And then let the wife have the other system and give her current machine to our children. That would be a great project.

And then you can configure a home network and make a LAN party within your family ... :D

The risc is you having the best computer, win all games, and then your children and wife say it's unfair and want an upgrade too ... that will burn a lot of cash ... but at least you're the man choosen (hopefully, if you don't cheat on gamming) to twist their rigs for the next years ...

... man, you'll end up spending all your vacation savings on computer parts ... then your family will hate you, you'll be all alone, with at least 3 rigs around ... AAAAAHHHHHHGGGGHHHH!!! STOP IT!!! You must resist to the computer scene!!! Your life depends on it! well, sort of ... :D

Your english is fine b4u. It's better than that of many Americans I interact with on the internet. Where are you from by the way?

This is a great thread...

And I want to change my graphic card, mobo, my PSU... Well, at least put a Zalman HP80 on my good old GF3 Ti200 (overclocked, of course and loudest thing in the box)...

However, I will upgrade my wifes PII 300 to a Duron 800 (will get it for free, so what the heck) and tweak it a little bit... Hmm, this will be my first AMD system. Well, not really, there was the 5x86 133MHz 486 compatible processor...

And yes, I know the feeling, just when you finish the system and it works OK you always need to change something, look out for new parts and, and, and...

Thats what I figured on doing, check my rigs page out. My wife is running an AMD xp1700, I am @ 2.3ghz on my 8rda+ and my 6 year old is @ 1.5ghz (xp1600) with a geforce 4 video card. All networked together, except no one wants to play any of my LAN games :-(

Wife luv's the Popcap games and my little guy is having a blast with cartoon network and Harry Potter right now.
Can't wait til he gets a bit older so we can play some FPS together :)

Boy, your 6 year old has a better rig than mine!!! And he doesn't use it!!!

I feel sorry for you, having such a LAN and no one interested in playing your games ... Popcap games you said? :Q Have you tried forcing your wife to play your games? Something like "Look here my love, I just chopped this mother-f###er head out!!! Isn't that sweet?" :D:D:D:D Well, maybe that wouldn't help!:(

And I have a PIII600EB with 256Mb RAM and a power Riva TNT2 32Mb (yes, it still exists), with a ... -drummers rumbling in the background- ... Western Digital 120Gb 8Mb Cache HD (ah! you don't make funny of my HD, now do you? Thought so!).

Well, there's your problem...turn it up to 1600x1200, up the viewing distance & other sliders all the way, and suddenly, not only will you need more processing power, another stick of RAM, and a better video card, but you'll force the power company to upgrade/replace the transformer you just blew. ;)

The only thing left to do is to buy more memory (I need another 512MB Corsair XMS stick) and a faster video card. The video card I'll buy is not out yet (hoping to God that the NV35 is a viable product upgrade from my GF4 Ti 4200 128MB) and the memory isn't desperately needed as of now so...

I think the PC upgrade thing is an addictive activity and I got hooked again. :( Before you say it, I do have a life. I work full time, I am a half-time college student, and I am a husband and father. I don't get a lot of time for my computers but I do enjoy whatever time I DO get.

Your thoughts?

ask your wifey about "post-natal depression syndrome." it's what happens after you give birth and the 9 months of segue into the birthing process leaves a feeling of emptiness once the child is actually born. sound/feel familiar;)?

I'm American and I can sympathize with mboy, my wife only plays PopCap and Zone games and my kids are stuck on "toy" games (i.e. Barbie, etc...). I can't get my wife to play UT2003 or Serious Sam with me to save my life. :D

LOL at the kid who has a Geforce4 in his system but doesn't use it :) That sucks though when you can't do anything...I know what you guys mean. I'd love to play my brother (he has a 1900+ and a 9000pro) who is just a year younger than me but our computers are about 25ish feet away and I can't find a crossover cable to reach that far else I'd be playing a LOT of CS with him ;)

Maybe this is why people will pay a lot of money to get fast internet connections - to be able to play...though its a lot funner when you are playing with a group of 10ish friends rather than on the internet or at a gaming cafe with a 80 other people. You get the "small group homely" kind of feeling that isn't anywhere else :)

And that would be bliss - smart, beautiful wife who can snipe you a mile away in BF1942 :)

Well, that's the least problem. Possible solutions:
1. Go to whatever electronic parts shop and they will crimp you the cable you want, length and crossover ability included
2. Buy a small hub and put "normal" LAN cables between the computers
3. Buy or find old coax LAN cards and put a coax cable in between the comps

Here's what I can tell from my experience ...

Back when I lived in my parents house with my brother, we had 2 rigs ... I got a null modem cable (serial) to start playing some games (like GP, Doom, and C&C) ... then we changed our rigs to 2 identical ones (they are still the same), and bought 2 network cards, and a cross cable RJ45 to do the link ... since we were connecting only 2 PC's, we only needed a cross cable, and NO hub at all ... so you have a pretty good solution to home network.

The cable is not expensive, and if I say each network card being around 20$ (20?), I can't be that far from truth ... and the beneficts are AWESOME!!! Kicking your little brother's on a lan game eheheh ... or being kicked ... :(
