This is a longshot, but can someone help me figure out a lockup problem in a flight sim?

Bottom line: probably will be forced into a complete reformat and I was hoping for some help along those line from this board to make sure I don't forget to back up anything critical before I blow away my HD. Are there any exhaustive lists of things to back up like emails, adress books etc. for a first timer? Details of problem are below if you can't sleep and need some relief from your insomnia...

This is long, but I have high hopes that someone will help me... IL-2 is by far my favorite flight simulator and all was

well until the 1.1 patch. Ever since then I've been fighting the occassional lockup. System specs are in my signature...

Lockup Symptom: can be flying in any mode (online, offline, QMB, FMB, etc) for any length of time (2 min, 2 hours, 45

minutes, etc) and suddenly the screen will freeze. Sound will still drone on for about 10 seconds or so, and if I hit

ctl-alt-del during this time, I can break out of IL-2 back to the desktop. Otherwise, if I wait it out, the sound will

disappear in its entirety and the system will lock to the point that I need to cycle the main power button to get the OS

back. Sometimes I get an error message from XP telling me I've got a error induced by the video card, and sometimes not.

Occassionally, the lockup will change the settings on my Audigy card so that it plays in a "stadium" (echo type) mode,

etc...

My hunch is that for whatever reason, the video and sound cards make a simultaneous call to the same address allocation --

hence the lockup... Basically, I think I know what I need to do: update drivers from he lowest level on up, etc... but I

need some advice along the way as I've never reformatted a hard drive or updated any drivers.

Here's a plan...

1.) Update Via 4-in-1s (currently using what comes in XP)
2.) If that doesn't help, try updating the video driver for my GF3 Ti500 to 23.12, Currently using 21.83
3.) If that doesn't help, try a reinstall of Audigy's latest sound drivers. Currently using the latest version.
4.) If that doesn't help, attempt to flash the bios on my MoBo (Epox 8kha+). I'm afraid to do this which is why I'm

considering it as a "last resort".
5.) If that doesn't help, back up the system and try to reformat and start "clean" witha fresh install of the latest of

everything.

I have a feeling that step 4 and 5 will be a reality : (

So... I notice that some on this board like IJ do the reformat thing on a regular basis to get a good video benchmark so I

was wondering if he or anyone else had any format tips -- there must be some sort of checklist to use when your backing up

to make sure you don't forget anything like emails, address book, favorites, settings, etc... Does someone have an

exhaustive list here.

Soliciting the help of all gurus here... Any comments related to fixing my IL-2 problem directly or backing up/reformatting

would be greatly appreciated.

P.S. Below are some error output files I found in the IL-2 root directory; I'm not sure what these are telling me and I'm

not even sure the specific lockup I'm having is related to these errors. I've had many more lockups than what I've found in

these 4 files... IL-2 config is also there after the error files... Again, system specs are in my sig.

whoa dude!

never, ever flash your mobo coz a game freezes up on ya
a game can be fixed, your mobo cant
if you dont do the flash just right you wil..and i mean will fry it but good
and besides...the system you have is fairly new and im sure the bios is up to date any way
what i would like to know is...do any other programs act weird?
or your winxp, how does it run?
if everythingelse is running fine then its just the game that needs fixing, not yer pc
a format really is no big deal to do tho...if yer gonna do it and have a burner just copy the stuff you dont wanna loose to a cd or two and format away
as for the game it looks like its been crashing while your online alot yes?
most certainly do steps 1-3 no matter what anyway
get the 29-80 drivers for yer vid card(30-30 drivers are out but they suk right now)
get the newest 4in1drivers
updating your sound is a moot point since they are prolly up to date anyway
if all else fails just uninstall the game and reinstall it

Longest post I've seen! :)

The first thing I'd do would be to uninstall and re-install the game.

Then the drivers, if necessary.

Just to add some moral support.

I had the same issue for several days once. I'm using a Radeon 8500 with a MSI 266a board. I noticed some other issues and decided to try a different set of drivers for my graphic card. I was using the CATALYST 2.1 drivers, I changed to the latest Omega drivers. Anyway... My problems went away. I'm not sure why the older drivers started causing errors but the uninstall/reinstall cleared things up for me.
