This is a callout to anyone with an iPod

First off, my bro just got a used 20GB 4th Gen one. Windows sees it, and does iTunes, but as soon as he unplugs it, he can't play it, as in the Apple logo shows up, then it comes up with a folder and an exclimation mark. I need to get it updated, but since Apple turned in a jack@@s, and stopped including AC-adapters with their iPods, it's kinda hard to, since it says you need to plug it into one. My questions are these:

1.) Will a car charger allow you to complete a firmware update?

2.) Will a firmware update allow me to use it do you think since Windows and iTunes can see it, I know the drives not dead in it?

LOL, I have, like 50 times, when I scope it out as a drive under My Computer, it seems to be missing a lot of the "hidden files and folders" that my working one has. When it arrived, it was in Mac format, therefore I had to completely format it in Windows using a FAT32. I can play music off the drive itself perfectly fine in iTunes as well, so I guess I'm gonna dl the firmware tonight, borrow my friends AC-adapter, and give it a spin, and cross my fingers

can you even plug it into both an AC adapter and the USB port at the same time? I thought they both used the dock connector (and indeed, the late model AC adapters are just wall warts with a USB port on them supplying 5v just like a PC's USB port)

Yea, all the new AC-adapters I've seen are like that. I need to pick one up, although they're freaking expensive. I did though see a Disney themed one for only $15 @ Target, I think the Disney theme reflexes the price...

Jesus Christ there's your mistake. If you just right clicked the drive and did a format of COURSE you screwed it up. Proper way to format is to do a full restore using the firmware updater.
