I always rinsed before with the assumed pretense that it soften the bristles a bit.

rinse prior to paste, apply paste, brush (away from gums only no circular or up and down or whatnot) until the sonicare says to stop, rinse sonicare and mouth out with water, rinse sonicare thoroughly. use floss pick things back at the desk (sometimes before brushing).
