This guy wondered why his computer locked up after an hour of use *pics*

That ain't nothin'

Try working on a guys comp that smokes 3 packs a day in a pooly ventalated office. sticky tar covers all. Or in a acidic enviroment like a metals lab where the components/cards start rusting after 6 months. I have seen it all which is why I'll never work on anyones computer but mines.

That's actually a bug documented by Microsoft; check out their site for the patch. :)

As for dust in general - that's why I like to use filters on my intake fans. \

Edit: Man this daylight savings time bug is funky.

I don't remember where I saw it, but something I read said that using an air compressor is a bad idea. I think it was in Maximum PC magazine; someone had written in that suggestion, and another person wrote in saying why it's bad. Something about static or water content I think? I'll have to dig around and see if I can find that though

I'll clean the fans or replace when needed but I never blow the "magic" dust off. So many times over the years after "cleaning" the dust off I've seen perfectly fine running PC's die after getting rid of the dust that is why I call it the "Magic" dust, get rid of it and the magic is gone and the PC is dead.

What happens is that we force electrical bridges or shorts between the small legs of the IC's that would not normally short with ordinary dust settlement but when we use forced air cans it wedges dust into nooks and crannies causing failure where there wouldn't be.

Back when I was installing NICs in systems for a living about 5 years ago, I saw something I never thought I'd see. This girl brings me a computer that weighed about 50 pounds....one of the OLD steel cases from a 386 that had been upgraded. I picked it up and got RUST all over my hands. I opened the case to install the NIC and found a couple of acorns.....I moved some ISA cards around and found a RATS NEST..............INSIDE THE COMPUTER. I guess it was trying to find a nice apartment with a good heater. Just goes to show....always keep those little slot covers on your system when you remove cards from their slots. ;)

You call this 'dirt'? ROFLMAO :D!

You know, I got a real dirty computer (inside). It's so dirty that when I opened it about 6 pounds of dust fell on the floor, it was filled with dust from the inside. I'd say it was pretty much just like inside a vacuum cleaner's bag. I just closed it, being too lazy to clean it, and your thread is the first thing that reminded me of it.

That's dusty alright..I wonder if it got bad enough an explosion could occur just like in a grain elavator from dust build up?? The right amount of dust and plenty of air could flash like gunpowder it would seem.......poof................:Q

I've seen computers with layers of dust so thick that when I opened them up it fell out in blocks.

My rig used to get pretty dusty, had to clean it rather frequently. Now I've bought myself a couple of filters and it's looking pretty clean.

Luckily some of us have enough airflow to suck small pets through the intake so our systems don't get as dusty.
