Colombia truck crashes, spills cocaine
Driver arrested after vehicle carrying nearly a ton of drugs flips over

Updated: 7:25 a.m. ET April 20, 2007
BOGOTA, Colombia - A truck loaded with cocaine flipped after taking a curve too fast, spilling nearly a ton of the drug across a Colombian highway.

Police said the drugs were hidden in the truck?s walls and roof, which ripped open Thursday when the vehicle overturned in Medellin, 155 miles north of the capital, Bogota.

The driver escaped injury but was quickly arrested.

Police said the cocaine was destined for the northern port of Uraba, a major exit point for Colombia?s massive drug smuggling industry.

I pictured white powder covering the road with a bunch of people with their nose to the ground.

Pedro Gonzalez, you have been found guilty of cocaine trafficking. We sentence you to freedom. We will be publishing the time and place of your release on the front page on the newspaper.

He was trying to avoid a police/military checkpoint and ran up on a curb. I don't know where they got the "going too fast around a curve" thing from. It is one of the larger drug busts in recent history in Colombia.

This story's a day old. He's already dead

Maybe. They do not always kill you or harm you if you get caught smuggling. Although with such a large seizure, and a bit of driver stupidity, I can imagine this driver will likely be an exception (unless he was related to a boss).

I know someone who got arrested for smuggling a good bit of cocaine in the tires of a large truck. The narcos aren't even pissed at him. The police are, however.

I don't think they were talking about the police killing the guy....

I think you need to read my post again, because I certainly wasn't talking about the police killing him either.

I'd be handing myself into the cops if I were him, though that probably wont keep him safe.
