Not really a friend, went to HS with him and just are FB contacts. His feed pops up here and there and I see him doing crap like this on his FB:

• 1st prize: Pick Shoe
• 2nd prize: $30 entry cashapp or venmo back to you
💰

💰
CASHAPP: $hisname
💰
VENMO: @hisname

1. John Smith
2. Jane Doe
3. another name
4. another name
5. ...
6. ...
so on...to 30 slots.

He's just a guy posting raffles for his friends and FB networks. The shoes are yeezys/air jordans whatever they are, worth about $250-300 each. The raffle spots are transparent (his friends put their names); confirmed by venmo; so there's no scam there. So he's collecting $900, and will come out $600-700 out of this. The drawing is done fairly via some online wheel.

So this is a $3,000~ car with at best, he's got $4,500 from it. Yes, he sold it with a full entry. Smart?

It's illegal raffle but who's going to enforce the law? Why are you wasting time even looking at that stuff? It's ghetto but I guess some people are desperate for any small amount of money.

Sorry for looking. Never seen anything like this before.

Then snag a bunch of chances next time you notice the post by all means!

After all what could possibly go wrong ?!?

😀
Because I'm not interested in a 10yo car with 200k miles......

or Air Jordans...

or some random fishing rod & reel

or a canoe set

IMO it shouldn't be illegal, it should be anyone's rights to find a way to make money and anyone's right to participate in the gamble. But yeah... that sounds like it's probably illegal.

I know there's ways you can do certain things like 50/50 draws as they tend to do it at hockey games but you need some kind of special license or something, it's not something just anyone can do.

I remember some drama many years ago. If I recall correctly, someone bought a rare NES game in-box (Fintstones Dinosaur Peak) and put it on one of these Facebook wheels. Then the winner tried to claim the box was fake, sending back a fake box in place of the real one he had received. The person running the wheel believed he had accidentally purchased a game with a counterfeit box, and tried to raise the issue with the previous owner. It turned into a big thing.

Anyway, it was the first I heard of these Facebook wheels and it seems shady as hell.

I'd guess its fixed then, and that they're looking to rope in other people that don't know that.
How would it be fixed? I'm sure there are ways, my brain is off for the day.

The wheel is an outside independent website:

Why scam and go to jail when you can clearly make money just fine at 75% margin?

I'd rather just take the waffle.

Of course it's illegal. But "next level"? Seriously? We used to do shit like that in grammar school. If you couldn't trade your banana for a pudding cup raffle off the banana instead.

A friend of mine does something similar with bingo on FB. Usually costs around $12 to play, need 15 minimum to start the game. Winner takes $130+ dollars, my friend gets a cut of around $40 and $10 gets "donated" somewhere I think. I bit and won my first time but haven't played again. I've seen people asking her regularly when she's going to start the next Bingo game and she constantly tags me to get me to play.

Had friend that regularly did something like this with his friends for handguns, rifles, etc...he had won some stuff so I bought like $50 worth of tickets and ended up winning an AR-15 pistol...I stopped playing after that though...

It was a legit sale...he did the background check when I went to go pick it up...if I didn't do the pickup, he would have sent to an FFL dealer of my choosing...

It did seem pretty sketchy though and I definitely wouldn't have done it if my friend had not won beforehand...No telling how much he spent on this (more than he should have though)...I only did it twice, won and then stopped...
