It looks like the cars absorbed most of the impact. No way he could have stood up alone or with help if he had a broken back, legs or serious crush injuries to his muscles. That said, he still could have suffered tremendous internal injuries and died in few minutes.

I also heard the female gasp/moan, and I take it from the volume and quick subsidence that it was actually an occupant of the other car screaming.

Also, was that a translation of City of New Orleans playing on his radio?
