This G Skill on Asus P5B-D for 4.0 OC w/ E8400?

Would this memory be fast enough so that I can get at least a 4.0 OC with an Asus P5B-D MB and an E8400? ...Not limiting my OC with 1:1 FSB/Mem ratio...???

E8400 is 3ghz... which is 333fsb x 9. @ 1:1 mem ratio is a horrible term that is very inaccurate. But whatever... at 1:1 (the lowest for ram) the memory will run at 667mhz and the CPU at 3ghz... if you increase the fsb to 400 you get 3.6ghz cpu and 800mhz ram (DDR2-800). If you want 4ghz than you divide 4000 by 9 to get fsb. you get 444.4 repeating, round it up to 445 fsb, multiply that by two you get 890 mhsz. almost any DDR2-800 module should easily reach a measily 90 mhz oc... Now if you want to actually increase your mem speed further, there is some benefit to get a 1066 module... the next step has you multiplying the base fsb by 2.4. so 445x2.4 = 1068. So a DDR-1066 module will be able to get that without any OC (2mhz don't count, and you can always just do 444 fsb instead of 445).

The ram you linked advertises 1066 speed, but only at 2.0 volts! So beware, it requires to to overvolt (the default is 1.8v for DDR2) in order to reach advertised speeds... that is the INDUSTRY STANDARD FOR ALL RAM MAKERS! So don't blame gskill for that one, its a good peice of ram that will perform well. But you could, realistically, get the 4ghz oc on cheaper ram.

So, what other specific ram for this MB and cpu will make this OC process(over 4.0) easiest?

If you're locked into the E8400 9x multiplier and want to run memory at 1:1 on a 4GHz OC...
This is a very good kit for you :thumbsup::laugh:

PC2-8800, rated to run at 1.8-1.9v
This kit is rated up to 550MHz. If your MB/CPU/Cooling could pull it off, this memory would allow for a 1:1 with your E8400 up to almost 5GHz.

So, Asus P5B-D, E8400, and that G Skill DDR2 1100... and that's as much as I can do, component-wise, to possibly get an OC at 4.0 or over...?

I have an Xigmatek s1283 cooler with the backplate, and a very good PS....PCP&C 610W Silencer...and I JUST ordered (2 min ago) an EVGA GTX280....can't wait for it to come in...

That Asus MB is a replacement for another P5B-D that died in December...(RMA'd to Asus)...

You're not going to get much (stable) OC past 4GHz from the E8400 on air cooling.
If you move to some exotic liquid or phase-change cooling you could get more.

Funny thing is that I did not think Asus would repair/replace that MB.

And so, I started my research about getting a new P45 MB...and was ready to get the Gigabyte UD3P or the DQ6. Then I got the email this morning from Asus, stating that the board was on it's way back. Geez, I guess it is possible they are just returning it to me...and will say they won't fix/replace it...I'm assuming (maybe wrongly) that I'm all set w/ a replacement MB from them...

If I do need to get the Gigabyte MB, would that G Skill memory you recommend be fast enough for good OC's on either the UD3P or the DQ6?? Or, get something faster?

any mobo that can oc will easily give 2 volts for ram... many can go up to 2.5 volts...
This ram will easily operate at DDR2-890 @ 1.8volts... and i think it should even be able to keep its advertised timing... if you want to run at the faster 1068mhz speed you could do that too, either by giving it 2 volts like it wants, or lowering the voltage to 1.8 and loosening the timing (raising them, the lower the timing, the FASTER the ram is)...

4ghz for an e8400 will work with most "quality" DDR2-800 ram, and will ALL DDR2-1000 and DDR2-1066 ram. Every non defective ram out there, even if it has no OC room, would be ok with such a low overclock.

So I should try my OC with my old Corsair XMS2 6400c4 memory ( 4gig 4x1 ) using all four memory slots? (...can always buy that G Skill ram listed above...)

BTW, yesterday afternoon I received another P5B-D MB from Asus ( rev 1.04g ). Original MB was rev 1.03g. This MB came in a bag w/ no cables, screws, etc...might it be a re-conditioned board? Even though I was still in W with that MB, I appreciate Asus doing that for me.

Within the next 2-3 days I will find out whether or not my messed-up previous OC just ruined the MB, or if it damaged some other components as well...hope my cpu and Corsair is ok...

go ahead and give it a try... but be aware that every extra stick you put in, puts a heavier load on your northbridge, which in turn, limits its ability to overclock the FSB. (and as a result, the CPU). there are also sometimes bios bugs related to running 4 sticks of ram instead of 2... BUT! you should go ahead and try since you already own the ram, if it does give you problems, try removing two of the four sticks and running with 2GB and see if it OCs better, if it does, you should look into a new 2x2 set. Otherwise youj should be golden. Do read the stickied guide to OCing in the CPU forum.

It just seems, based on your comments and a few others' at different forums I visit, that the best way to go is get that above linked G Skill ram....2 sticks/ 4 gig.... sounds like I'm determined to spend that money...oh well...I did not have to pay for a new MB!... even though I wanted to buy a new one!

Edit... 4:25pm EST.... just bought the G Skill 4gb(2x2)DDR2 1100(PC2 8800)...will
have by Friday when the GTX 280 arrives....WOW...Christmas 2009 on Jan 30th!
