Anyone see these commercials on TV yet? I have to admit that I use this term numerous times thoughout the days lately. I've pointed to "gay ass" cars, read "gay ass" threads, and just simply made it a normal part of my daily vocabulary.

I've even let it slip at work and no one batted an eye.

I don't think I mean anything derogatory towards any actual Gay person when I say this though. Words can change meaning over time, and I think this is one of those times.

I mean really, is saying "that's so gay" really that bad?
edited.

I'm not offended when someone calls something gay but I just think it's kind of sad that you can't find any other more appropriate word to describe something in a negative way. Is it really that hard to speak a language correctly? It's more insulting that you choose to be an idiot to me than saying a slur against gay people.

ex:

1) you see two guys kissing... you're right, that IS gay.
2) you get a C on your math test... that isn't gay and you look fucking foolish for saying it.

Really, is it so hard to just use one of the many fine words that actually means what you're trying to say?

this. kids sound like dumbasses when they use "gay" to describe things that suck, so i steer clear of sounding as stupid as they do. and yes, its derogatory, they never say it relating to stuff they like. just stuff that sucks. "they wont let us into that rated R movie, thats so gay!"

IIRC I stopped using it at the age of 18 when a girlfriend pointed it out to me.

I think its offensive, but you can say it if you want to be an ass.

Wow, that commercial was fucking retarded.

KT

and gay. totally gay.

I don't know a single homosexual person that doesn't use that phrase with the same intent. It makes me think it's perfectly valid, so I still use it, constantly.

sweet, I'm totally gonna start saying nig ger all the time now because I hear black people use it.

I used to get offended when people used gay to mean stupid; being the son of gay parents, it hits close to home. But then I realized that where many people were using the word gay, I was using the word retarded. Well, that's offensive to mentally retarded people. I didn't mean to be offensive, it honestly never entered my thoughts that it might be. And I realized that people who say gay were thinking the exact same thing. It's a word that our culture has adopted to mean stupid; that's patently offensive. But no one who uses it is thinking "HAH, that'll show those uppity queers!" It's as offensive as "retarded", and as soon as I realized that, I realized that complaining about either is a waste of time. I don't bother getting offended by it any more, and I've realized that the vast majority of people who say it are not homophobic.

People who take offense to everything are retarded cause that's totally gay.

However, that's not an entirely valid comparison, due to the meaning of the words involved.
