Yea, that's the thing I like about it. I can read varied stuff without going anywhere. The primary site design is pretty much intolerable though. Amazing they could come up with something so shitty without explicitly trying to make it shitty.

Depends on the subreddit, lots of them are good and not as you describe. I mean, there's nearly 3 million subreddits apparently...

Yes seriously. There are plenty of great subreddits that have helped me find out lots of wonderful things on one website. With plenty of positive interaction. My Reddit is pretty much politics free so I don't have to worry about those motherfuckers.

Sure the interface is archaic and a lot of the technical stuff is crap. I mean you can't even respond to a subreddit with a photo. It's terrible.

But as far as the community quality, saying this is like a bunch of 4channers is stupid.

Biggest issue with reddit is, ironically, the total lack of actual community.

Yes there are a lot of people to "talk to" but I honestly cannot remember the names of any of them. Just a bunch of random conversations 1-2 responses deep and then that person is gone forever.

On the other hand there are least a dozen people here that I know well enough to wish I had never known them.

Yeah, aside from a fairly small gaming sub-reddit I was on in the mid teens, almost no community.

The reason the subredders I use are good communities to me is because they provide a great source of information for common interests and hobbies, whether or not I know the people posting or not.

Sure it's nice to have a smaller community but the amount of information I can get due to the sheer number of posters kind of makes up for the almost self-built-in anonymity due to scale of users.

I've discovered campsites, hiking trails, bike rides, food places (I mean New York City is just an insane food destination and if you don't hear real life discussions on so many options you'll miss out on so much) tons of shit about my high-end audio hobby, the certain tech I use, games I play, and on and on.

Not to mention the cute animal stories or most of all the memes I post in p&n. The list goes on.

Oh absolutely discovered some great movies and insights of different shows and entertainment too.

Just a quick list of the top of my head

With Reddit about to absolutely nuke their community by effectively banning 3rd party apps on July 1st, old school forums like AT should be hopefully get a little bit of a booster shot of folks leaving the site.

I've been mentioning AT (and vBulletin based forums in general) when I can in those discussions on Reddit.

As soon as Bacon Reader gets shut down, my primary method of interacting with Reddit will go away. The site is pure cancer on a mobile browser and their app is pure garbage, so no BR, no reddit for me personally and likely a lot of other users there.

Oh yeah, no NSFW content even if 3rd party apps can somehow cough up the millions of dollars to license the API...

Its like someone at Reddit is being paid off to drive down the buyout price.
what exactly was the point of reddit? I've had a gander a few times and feel sorry for being human.

anandtech doesn't use vbulletin. it uses xenforo. i used to develop paid mods for vbulletin the first few years of its life. some of them were eventually absorbed as standard features or came along when the original developers made xenforo years later.

forums are damn dead mate. they haven't been relevant in years imo. everyone's moved to facebook groups or reddit however in the hell you can use that website and not be disgusted by the content spewed on there with almost no decent moderation. it seems like it's a wanna be digg before digg committed sepuku.

Ever since I had one interaction with moonbeam i've seen that word, moonbeam, every other week on telly or in written form. the universe is playing a cruel joke on us sane people. like saying, yeah go on you meat sack, go read some more stupid posts.

it's like regular forums, you gotta find and subscribe to the individual groups or subreddits with the amount of moderation that you want

there's usually multiple subreddits for any given topic with different levels of moderation

and often there is a separate subreddit for a topic to make fun of people who take the topic too seriously

I always find useful Reddit content through google searches. Searching on Reddit itself returns junk. After the first few experiences, I've given up. I would prefer if Reddit replaced their UI and used the same one that AT uses. At least it would make more sense then.

that may be the only benefit. i remember when forums were the hot thing in the late 90s and early 2000s you'd get a ton of daily emails or birthday notices. like most online mediums sites like forums or reddit if they do whatever the op is claiming, too much whining that it's lost to time once the site goes down.

At work, I browse in incognito mode. I'm at work now and this is what I got on the 3rd page:

It has good user experiences related in it.

Quora? Maybe once in a blue moon. The crappiest information is littered throughout that site, with gems strewn about here and there. The posters there remind me of my non-technical colleagues I have to suffer. Like the ones complaining that now they have to get into a submenu to refresh the desktop in Windows 11 as they were used to doing it a dozen times in previous versions because it "improves" the computer speed. The sort of stuff that makes you want to blow your head off upon hearing it.

It's actually too bad that forums are mostly dead now days. I still find it's a superior format. With things like Reddit, conversations basically last a few days then are buried. It's harder to keep anything going as there is no "bumping". I've been meaning to revive my forum for ever and keep procrastinating because deep down I kinda know it's going to be dead anyway but I need to just do it so I can at least have it running anyway.

Biggest problem with Quora is the garbage moderation... I stopped posting there entirely.

In some subreddits you can respond with an image, I don't know the details behind how/why you can in some but not others.
I post in some music-related subreddits, someone at a local concert actually recognized me from reddit which was kind of a trip.
