I do miss the good old days. Entering OT was like walking into a crowded room with hundreds of interesting conversations going on.

I used to complain about the sub-forums, then the forum format change. But now 95% of the time I can't even get to the forums even if I wanted to. How many other people are getting the ERR_SSL_PROTOCOL_ERROR? A long thread in the forum technical issues page has gotten nowhere. If I can't log in most of the time, how many other people are trying and giving up?

This problem was occasional a few months ago. But each passing week it gets worse and worse. I just can't get pings from 174.76.226.162 or 174.76.226.148. I have tried on multiple computers, in different cities, with different service providers and no ping most of the time.

None here. 😕

I've been getting that with icecat mobile. In fact, it just happened. Got notice to 'restart to complete changes', and it works now. Happens very rarely with firefox mobile. If it starts again, I'll try to nail down the issue. httpseverywhere is a possible culprit.

I noticed it's pretty dead too, and most forums seem to be.

And here I am working on reviving one of my forums, seems like an ass backwards move for me to do. If these big forums are dying I doubt I'll be able to get much people posting on mine. 😛

All forums are dying. Twitter and other social media have replaced them...

Why troll a forum of nobodies when you can do it to celebrities on Twitter/Instagram... the ultimate high score troll target where you can even make the news.

Exactly. Back here because I'm too depressed after the election to go back to my Twitter politics account

forums come and go, but AT seems immortal, while the tech forums in italian I used to look at too have a MUCH shorter lifecycle, like a few years at most, before they become helpdesks for noobs with a single sad soul answering with a bunch of dead subforums or the admins clamp down on the OT stuff and kill the forum in the process.

It happens to all forums at some point.

The new software isn't a big issue for me because I use VB Style (Experimental).

I think new younger users aren't spawning on forums because of reddit. People younger than me grew up with reddit available with its hundreds of lively tech subreddits. It even has the critical mass to create active forums about single games, and it's very easy to use.

Stackexchange also became the go-to place for serious/skilled questions about programming, operating systems etc. so that's even more life taken out of forums.

Politics and news have partially switched to twitter and comments (like disqus) under news and blog articles.

I don't like the forum change, didn't like it last time either. I don't like the "like" button. If they want that, should be a dislike option as well. But that'd probably hurt people's feelings, can't have that. I do like if you have someone ignored, you don't see their post at all anymore, not just "this user is blocked" or something like that.

A few posters have made it worse around here. People who spam the forums with dumb topics and posts over and over. New comers who do nothing but troll and insult with excess of 30 posts a day? Making me want to be here less and less.

Edit, oh and mods shouldn't be able to moderate in a sub topic that they post in. There can be a clear bias and favoritism for certain sides or people. This already happens.

I do think there are way too many subforums, especially for the actual tech forums. There isn't critical mass in any of them. People have been saying this for a while, but they just keep making more.

Forum isn't dead, there is a lot of political hysteria which has everybody occupied over at P&N. Just like the NFL suffered worse ratings during election season and bounced back, ATOT will to.

Unlike the commissioner, my salary isn't tied to ATOT viewership, so my millions dollar payday isn't at risk like his is. Sucker.
