Whew, that was close. Only through the application of extraordinary willpower was I able to close that window and not spend the next three hours watching videos of cool machines.

Indeed. I still love the video of the backhoe excavator thingy rowing the barge down a river. "Dammit, engine's busted, we're screwed......or maybe not."

This way is cheaper. Clever...although it will put premature wear on the truck tires and suspension.

How much power do these grabbers have?

grabber vs. motorcar

One lever controls the fingers together or does the operator have independent control?

Every Chrysler needs this treatment at 50,000 miles. Thank you for making our roads safer.

Still strange they didn't, y'know, FIX THE HEADGASKET.

Well executed, could've gone wrong but it didn't.

Our safety guy at work showed us some pictures he had taken the of a guy that was killed the day before when he was unloading a new bulldozer.

They were unloading it off of a low boy trailer and had to use cribbing to do so. The roll over cage was not install since it was new. It flipped over backwards and rolled all the way over.

His bloody head was literally smashed into the dirt.

Not sure how comfortable I'd be with all that weight on just 1 axle even if it only for a few seconds.

Fairly typical Op. Eng. work there. They use the excavating arm of thoes machines to do a lot of different things.
I'm going to guess this took place outside of he USA, so OSHA is probably not an issue.

Other than the truck is a little undersized for the load  that looked like pretty normal unloading of an excavator. While cranes were my thing, I've had to run excavators a number of times in my career, and it's very rare that the low-bed driver has rampe or is willing to drag them out for a piece of equipment that can unload itself...just walk up to the trailer, set the bucket down flat in the reinforced part of the bed, lift the tracks up, gently walk forward while crowding the bucket/dipper toward you, then, walk forward till you get the weight of the excavator on the bed, then (more normal than the video) use the bucket to catch the weight of the tractor before you walk past the tipping point...not that difficult once you get the hang of it...but the first time or 2, your asshole can suck a peak in the seat tall enough to have snow on it...:D

ooh, towards the end i thought the truck was just gonna hit the back end of the excavator, they were pretty resourceful for turning the excavator backwards and using its crane for leverage.

Excavators is what I do. That was a bit rough on the rear axle but repeatable if they have the right kind of suspension.
The link of the one loading over the rear is normal for that lowboy, it is a fixed unit without the removable front end like this:pic
I have had to load over the side in downtown Seattle on a lowboy that tall, with a machine that big. They stopped traffic on the other side of the trailer, and I lifted the machine up on the trailer, walked to the balance, and pinned the machine with the bucket on the ground and spun it into place on the deck. it is kinda rough on the deck boards, looks like a giant cheese grater got to it.
Me loading 30 ton offroad truck
46 metric tons of excavator
Todd by the 40 ton johnny for scale, he's 6'2" without the hardhat:)
another scale shot
The 40 ton was a kick to drive. It would climb over anything, go through mud 3' deep.
The first day I got in it there was snow an the ground. After the first 147,000 lb., 6 wheel powerslide, I needed new underwear:p
If you're not careful out there, Sh!t happens.

nice pics!
Did anything break in that last one? If I didn't know any better, I'd say it almost looks like it's supposed to do that. It looks like the frame is rotating to accommodate for the weight. :p
