large as in displacement, weight, or physical size?
it may have a large displacement, but the LS/LT engines are physically compact and relatively lightweight compared to DOHC counterparts that put out similar power #'s.
remember the corvette LS7 vs. BMW M5 V10? both 500hp, 7.0L vs. 5.0L - but the corvette engine was physically more compact, weighed significantly less, and produced more torque at lower RPMs.
so just because something displaces a large volume says nothing about how physically large or heavy the engine is. HP/L is, quite frankly, a fairly useless comparison of engine performance and efficiency.
Displacement. Though I'm with you on your point regarding weight. Can two extra cylinders account for 100 lbs? Maybe. But I wouldn't exactly cross shop those cars. I wouldn't necessarily cross shop the M6 to the Vette either. The M5 was all Bangled up...horrible to look at. The M6...it's a GT, not what the Vette is. I don't see you cross shopping a Vette with an Aston Martin, which you're forced to do if comparing via the M6.
A better comparison is the LS7 to the S65. Both V8s, obviously, but designed very differently from each other and virtually identical in weight.
But this is not supposed to be a American vs German vs Japanese or whatever.
My point was to blindly say American cars are the best because they're American is stupid. And to claim that those that don't think so are also stupid is stupid. God forbid someone has an opinion and will actually discuss something rather than saying OMG rolleyes or I'm ignorant.
You on the other hand were not in those camps...so appreciation where its due.
