20fps? bleh

We need some 60fps HD camcorders.
As an artist, I thought you would appreciate the fact that 24FPS gives the most "film-like" quality to HD video.

I enjoy vibrant realism more than any kind of XYZ effect. The closer film can get to real life, the better. High resolution, high FPS, and vibrancy are what I'd consider good quality.

As a filmmaker, I feel that film looks 400x better than 30i. I hate hate hate 30i, it looks awfully fake. Film speed adds character. Maybe 48P would be appropriate.

For me it's all about fluidity. When I first saw the link in the OP, the first things that went through my mind were, in order:

1. Impressive resolution.
2. Don't like compression artifacts.
3. There's something wrong with the motion (as the boy's head turns).
4. Good colors.
5. What's wrong with the motion?
6. Check framerate. 20fps?
7. Close, open WMP (non-classic), replay
8. The motion is still not smooth.
9. Check framerate. 23.5fps?
10. :(

Me, I always disliked the flicker of 24fps. Framerate is not the only thing. I watched to see if you picked up one of the Mini35 samples. Folks over in DVInfo net are mounting Mini35 adapters with custom rail kits and running Primes on them. Now you get even more film-like with really shallow DOF.

DVInfo HD20 samples section

You can go here ^ for more. Look for the Brevis and Letus35 samples (Afternoon Rain was with the Letus35). Some of these will blow your mind.

Here is a good example Dennis Wood Brevis on Ice
MPAA *R* for person smoking in video ;)

I debated on the HV20 but went with the HC7 because it has a) more manual controls, b) OIS that is not prone to element shake in extreme sports - a Canon bug, c) Mic In, d) headphone out, and e) better finish.

This is with a HC7, deinterlace and converted to 720p(30). I hope to have a helmet cam sample sometime in the next 2 weeks (Day 5 of Deshake!)

On the RED comment... $50k nicely configured. BUT Jim Jannard has told us that they are working on a RED pocket pro video camera. Details are secret, but it is expected to be another generation leap at a reasonable price.

Doesn't this camera shoot 60FPS at 1080i? I'm 99% positive that 24P is only one of its modes, and it has others that do 60FPS for sports and such.

Standard HD rate is 1080i60. The Cinemode does 1080 24p. Only problem with it is that Canon does not send the pull-down info in the stream so most editors are not interpreting it correctly. There are some published workflows and even a DLL available for VirtualDub to correctly decode the stream.
