Last time I had to locate a beep in the house, it turned out to be our alarm system. There is a battery backup in the main panel and the battery was low and telling us to change it. It took about 20minutes to figure it out, it as I was sure it was the smoke or CO2 detector.

Everyone says I'll get used to it eventually, but I don't think I ever will. I just deal with it now. It's funny, in a quiet room, some people will hear it and look around wondering where it's coming from ;)

Most likely a smoke detector thinks it's battery is on the way out. Mine does that now and then and I use either Duracell or Energizer 9V in them. Invariably, it will usually beep while I am sleeping, then it is a waiting and listening game to pinpoint which one is causing the racket.

UPDATE: Our gas & electric meters were recently upgraded to something digital and automatic. Due to Hurricane Irene and last week's snowstorm damage, the meters went haywire. I noticed a stranger outside playing around with the meters and went out to check, the beep was coming from outside & the PSE&G guy said that was what happened.

Weird that I couldn't find that the beep was coming from outside just by my kitchen window.

Hooray, no more tiny little beep. If it happens again I'll recognize it.

Beep!

In all seriousness, it's probably the smoke detectors. I've found it's really difficult to locate where the sound is coming from in that tone even if you're right next to the offending device.

Alarm system?

Heh, when one of mine starts to beep I just pull them all down and change the batteries in all of them.
