That's gotta be the worse case of Treacher collin's syndrome :(

A guy at my workplace has a mild case of it, and it distorts his face SLIGHTLY, but nowhere near this girl's distortion. I hope doctors can reconstruct her face into a somewhat normal appearance.

Having a child should never be taken for granted...

That is really rough stuff for a Dad to see

Her cognative abilities are normal, her face is simply disfigured and her ability to speak is currently being impeeded by the disfigurement. She still has the ability to be a lot smarter than those of you saying they should have let her die.

Interesting ... I wonder if the family setup a paypal account, if the web or Anandtech or however people could get organized - could each one of us bless the family with $1 or whatever.

I'd rather have my child to be born like that than to be born with down's
The face is repairable, they probably can't do much now while it's still growing very rapidly, but they could definitely make her pretty close to normal again. Also our tax dollars are paying for it already.
Still sad though :(

Would it have been better just let nature take it course and let her die? I mean, do you put someone through a life of horror and misery, or let nature do its thing? Let's be realistic here: she will NEVER, NEVER look like even the fugliest girl in her class. No guy will marry her or date her. She can't talk or communicate so what kind of job will she have? She will be in a lot of physical and emotional pain the rest of her life. Her parents are stressed beyond belief and financially pushed to the limit.

When I get married and have kids, I most definately could not deal with that.

Same here. As much as I am against abortion, I couldn't let that kid be born. Life would be all but pain and misery.

Tell that to Helen Keller who was blind and deaf. That's far worse than being deformed. She had a great life.

Um....no.

She had a face and could breathe and looked normal.

Being blind and deaf is nothing compared to not having a face.

Uh you'd rather have a face than to have the ability to see and hear?

its comparing two forms of retchedness..not easy. but keller, while being sort of isolated from the world because of her disability, was isolated from her disability in a way... not having a face and seeing your hideous barely functional self every day...thats different. after being taught enough i'm sure keller could pass for relatvely normal. not having a face? well ... she has a face, its just %#@ hideous and nothing can ever hide it. thats rather different.
