For Adoption -
Joey is a male, Black and Tan, dense coated (at the moment) full
blooded German Shepherd who will be 9 months old. He was turned into the
Bergen County Animal Shelter by his college-going owner who had moved,
leaving Joey behind.
Joey has been evaluated twice by us, on two separate occasions and he is a PURE JOY to be around. He has no training issues, asides from being a 9
month old, and even at that, he is wonderfully behaved. He takes verbal
corrections 95% of the time. He already knows sit and down and he seems
to have no interest in dogs in general. He loves attention, and loves to
cuddle.
He never showed any aggression while we checked his teeth, ears, gums,
paws, nails, elbows, hocks, tail, or belly. He walks well on a leash, and
enjoys playing ball. He will readily give up a ball or toy for
interaction with you, has no dominance over food or toys. He has a normal
to low prey drive. He has no fear of objects or noise and has a general
outgoing well adjusted temperament.
He is fearful in his kennel in the shelter, but once out he is absolutely
fine. (Since we were strangers to him, we coaxed him out with food.
However, the adoption director can easily take him out since she has
already bonded with him. It's just a matter of developing a little trust with this wonderful dog.) He does not have issues in confined spaces. We
are attributing the kennel fear to the general conditions of the kennel,
and the association of abandonment as he is a very sensitive dog that will
bond immediately with humans. He does not have a problem being crated.
We tested him in a portable crate and he showed absolutely no signs of
stress.
Unfortunately, because Joey does not like being kept in the kennel
environment, the shelter misevaluated him upon his arrival as
un-adoptable. However, through the thankful efforts of some of the
shelter staff, he has been given somewhat of a reprieve. He is on VERY
LIMITED TIME due to their overcrowding.
In summary, he is a wonderful, sweet dog with little to no issues, which
is rarely found in a shelter. He will be put down if a someone does not
take him and he is a dog that is absolutely worth saving. He can easily
be placed in most homes and at 9 months old his life should just be
starting, not ending.
