Thirteen (2003) - Great movie

I know most folks here love movies where the protagonists get fucked up beyond repair, shit hits the ceiling fan and characters crumble to bits and pieces.

Just saw the movie and I was surprised I had never heard of it before (or mentioned in the numerous movie recommendation threads that keep popping up). In a nutshell, it's about a thirteen-year-old girl whose friendship with a 'bad girl' turns into a one-way ride on the highway to hell. Sex, drugs, rebellion, whiny bitchy tantrums, wrist-slicing, self-destruction et al - I'm sure it's been done before. If there are movies that do it better, I most certainly would like to know.

The lead trio Evan Rachel Wood (the tormented girl), Nikki Reed (the negative influence) and Holly Hunter (the mother whose patience is put to the ultimate limit) absolutely owned the movie - particularly in the final confrontation scene. If Requiem for a Dream gripped you by the balls, there are scenes in this movie that will cause you to flinch and cringe on your couch.

For what appears to be an ultra low-budget movie, the visual style is in-your-face and definitely leaves an impression. I have tremendous respect for the cast & crew now; I'm surprised I haven't seen any of their other work.

Recommended for solid acting and that oh-so-wonderful way movies can disturb you; doubly so if you are a parent.

I'll have to see it one day. To me it always looked like some kind of chick-flick drama, didn't really know it was a quality drama.

i couldnt watch past the part where the daughter is completely out of control, to the point where she's mouthing off to the mom "no panties no bra" and the mom doesnt know what to do.

i couldnt watch what was next.

Did you seriously just compare Thirteen to Requiem for a Dream?

No, I said it is in a similar vein. Bad decision after bad decision, life starts going down the crapper. Yes, this is about teenage girls and the other is about young drug-dealing adults (and a middle-aged wreck).

I know this movie can be categorized by some as a 'teen-angst slutty-emo-chick-drama' but I liked it. The film was brilliantly paced and the acting was superb.

1408 is a damn good movie. one of the few thrillers of recent times to receiver a positive rating on rottentomatoes, and I'd agree with it. I love the movie.

you guys really mean it? 1408 was unbelievably bad. i even went into it thinking 'maybe there will be good acting' and there was- for the entire bunch of 12 minutes that sam jackson was on the screen. the rest? PUKE. i dont mean to be hating either, i honestly cannot believe people thought 1408 was good. is it really just me?

This line discredits your entire argument. Samuel L. Jackson has never in his life been a good actor.

Kids is far superior.

I thought Thirteen was alright, but the more I think about it, it was pretty bad and very unrealistic.
